Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Frame

Thirty feet away, on the elevated upper level of L’Hiver’s dining area, sat Julian Sterling.

At forty-two, Julian was a high-stakes corporate recovery specialist—a man hired by international banks to locate vanished assets, stolen money, and kidnapped executives. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair streaked with silver at the temples, his sharp, analytical eyes constantly scanning the room out of professional habit.

Sitting across from him was another child—a ten-year-old girl with straight dark hair and sharp, intelligent eyes, wearing a dark blue woolen coat that was two sizes too big for her.

Julian had been watching the scene at Guzman’s table for the last three minutes, his sharp mind connecting the dots with cold, logical precision. The child sitting at his own table had walked up to him five minutes ago, bypassing security by slipping through the service entry, carrying a folded piece of paper in her fist.

"Who is looking for your mother?" Julian asked the ten-year-old, his voice calm, steady, and devoid of judgment as he leaned across the white tablecloth.

"The man who took my mom," the older girl answered, her voice far more guarded than her younger sister’s. "The man with the silver ring."

"What man?" Julian pressed gently. "Did she give you a name?"

"No," the girl said. She reached into her coat pocket and laid a small, black-and-white Polaroid photo onto the table between them. "She said he was the reason she disappeared twelve years ago. She took this photo three days ago through the window of our house in Marseilles."

Julian picked up the Polaroid.

The image was blurry, taken through rain-streaked glass at night. It showed a tall, broad-shouldered man standing under a streetlight, his face obscured by the brim of a fedora. But his left hand was raised to his collar, and on his index finger was a distinctive, heavy signet ring shaped like a coiled viper holding a red ruby in its jaws.

Julian’s irises contracted into pinpricks. His hand froze.

"Wait..." Julian muttered, his voice suddenly dropping into a dangerous chill. "I know him."

"You know the man who hurt my mom?" the girl asked, her voice cracking for the first time.

"His name is Victor Cole," Julian whispered, his jaw tightening until his facial muscles stood out like iron wires. "Former French intelligence officer. He runs a private mercenary syndicate out of Geneva. Three years ago, he was hired to liquidate the assets of the Vance Shipping Trust..."

Julian snapped his head toward the front of the restaurant, his eyes locking onto Arthur Guzman, who was now standing up with his younger granddaughter in his arms.

"Cole didn't just kidnap Clara Guzman twelve years ago," Julian realized out loud, his mind putting the final, horrifying piece of the puzzle together. "He used her as leverage to control Guzman's shipping routes. And now... he’s here to finish the job."
