Chapter 8 - The Crimson Fog

Julian caught the two young girls by their shoulders, pulling them back toward the basement corridor behind Marcus.

"Arthur! Don't do something stupid!" Julian yelled.

"Get them underground!" Guzman roared, his voice booming like thunder in the enclosed space.

Julian didn't argue further. He scooped both girls into his arms, carrying them down the concrete stairs into the reinforced wine cellar just as Marcus slammed the three-inch-thick steel blast door shut behind them.

Inside the dark, silent cellar, the little girls held onto each other, weeping softly amidst rows of vintage wine bottles.

Upstairs in the dining room, the front steel shutter finally collapsed inward with a heavy, metallic crash.

Victor Cole stepped through the burning frame, flanked by three heavily armed mercenaries. He held a silenced assault rifle, his silver viper signet ring gleaming in the light of the cutting torch.

"Guzman!" Cole called out, his deep, raspy voice echoing through the smoke-filled room. "Come out, old man! It's over! I have your daughter outside! Give me the clearance codes for the Baltic shipping terminals, and I’ll leave her alive on your doorstep!"

Arthur Guzman stepped out from behind the grand piano, standing tall in the center of the room, completely unbothered by the three rifles trained directly on his heart.

"You took my daughter twelve years ago, Cole," Guzman said softly, his voice devoid of fear. "You made her live in shadows. You made my grandchildren run like animals."

"It was just business, Arthur," Cole sneered, raising his rifle. "Where are the girls?"

"They're safe," Guzman whispered. "And you're in my killing box."

Guzman pressed the red button on his remote control.

Hissing jets of dense, opaque halon fire-suppression gas erupted from thirty hidden ceiling vents, flooding the dining room in a matter of seconds. The thick white fog instantly consumed the room, reducing visibility to zero.
