Chapter 9 - The Alley of Redemption

While the fire-suppression gas consumed the upper floor, Julian Sterling wasn't resting in the basement.

Using a heavy iron crowbar from the utility rack, Julian forced open the cellar’s secondary emergency hatch—a narrow maintenance tunnel that emptied into the rain-soaked drainage alley behind the restaurant.

"Marcus, stay with the girls," Julian commanded, hauling himself up through the wet metal grate into the alley. "If anyone comes down those stairs who isn't me or Arthur... blow the tunnel."

"Understood," Marcus nodded grimly, racking his pistol slide.

Julian scrambled into the dark, rain-swept alleyway.

The storm was howling now, driving cold sheets of rain against the brick walls. Down at the mouth of the alley, parked at the curb with its engine idling, sat the black delivery van.

Julian moved like a shadow, keeping his back pressed against the wet brick walls, his 9mm Glock held close to his chest.

Standing at the rear doors of the van was a single guard, wearing a yellow poncho, holding an umbrella in one hand and a submachine gun in the other.

Julian didn't waste time with warnings. He closed the distance in three silent, sprinting strides.

Before the guard could turn, Julian caught him in a chokehold from behind, driving his knife into the tactical vest's shoulder seam. The guard went limp without making a sound, dropping into the mud.

Julian grabbed the guard's keycard, swiped it across the van’s rear door lock, and yanked the heavy doors open.

Inside the dark, metal-lined cargo bay, tied to an iron anchor ring, sat a woman in her late thirties. She was thin, her clothes worn, her face pale—but her hazel eyes were fierce, bright, and instantly recognizable.

"Clara?" Julian whispered.

The woman lifted her head, her lips trembling as she looked at his face. "Julian...?" she choked out. "The girls... where are my babies?"

"They're safe," Julian said, slicing through her wrist bindings with his combat knife. "Your father is inside. We're getting you out of here."
