Chapter 11 - The Tearing of the Veil

Two hours later.

The conference room on the ninth floor of the Federal Building was quiet, sterile, and cold.

Two senior FBI Special Agents, along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Jenkins—a sharp, thirty-five-year-old prosecutor with dark hair and a no-nonsense demeanor—sat around the long mahogany table.

On the large wall-mounted monitor at the front of the room, the video file 2026_08_02_CAM_04_BASEMENT.MP4 was playing on a loop.

The room was deathly quiet save for the clear, horrifying audio of Julian Vance begging for his life, followed by Evelyn’s cold voice and Mark’s compliance.

Prosecutor Jenkins sat back in her leather chair, her hands clasped under her chin, her face as pale as chalk. She had prosecuted cartel bosses, public corruption, and organized crime syndicates, but the utter, casual horror displayed in the Sterling family video made her stomach turn.

"My God," Jenkins whispered softly, turning her eyes to Emily, who sat across the table holding a warm cup of tea. Lily was sleeping soundly on a sofa in the adjacent private office, guarded by two female Federal Marshals. "This isn't just murder. This is an entire institutional empire built on violence and systemic extortion."

"There are thirty-one more files on that card," Emily said quietly, her voice steady, her hands no longer shaking. "Financial ledgers, wiretap audio of state judges, records of offshore accounts used to pay off environmental regulators. Evelyn Sterling kept everything. She recorded her own crimes to maintain absolute collateral over everyone who worked for her."

Special Agent Ramirez, a veteran investigator with grey hair at his temples, stood up from his chair, closing his notepad.

"We just ran the authentication algorithm on the video file," Ramirez announced, his voice dark. "The digital signature is clean. No manipulation, no edits. Timestamp matches the missing persons timeline for Vance perfectly."

Jenkins stood up, her eyes flashing with razor-sharp prosecutor's intent. She picked up her secure phone.

"Issue an emergency federal arrest warrant for Evelyn Sterling and Mark Sterling," Jenkins commanded into the line. "Charge them with Title 18, Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, federal witness tampering, and first-degree murder. Contact the SWAT tactical unit in the northern district. Execute the warrants at Oak Ridge immediately."

She hung up the phone, walked around the table, and stood before Emily.

"Mrs. Sterling," Jenkins said gently, extending her hand. "You and your daughter are under full federal witness protection effective right now. They will never touch either of you again."

Emily looked at the prosecutor’s outstretched hand. She didn't take it immediately.

"I don't want protection, Prosecutor," Emily said softly, her eyes filled with an ancient, unyielding flame. "I want to be there when you take her doors down."
