Chapter 8 - The Siege in the Dark

"They're here," Emily whispered into the phone.
"Emily? Emily, run!" Mark panicked over the line, but Emily disconnected the call, throwing the phone onto the bed.
She didn't waste a single second. She rushed to the bed, grabbed the sleeping Lily, and pulled her tightly into her arms. Lily woke up with a small, startled gasp, her eyes wide with fear in the dim light of the motel room.
"Shh... baby, stay quiet," Emily breathed into her ear, pressing her hand gently over Lily’s mouth. "We're playing a hiding game, okay? Not a sound."
Lily nodded rapidly, her small arms wrapping around Emily’s neck like a vise.
Emily snatched her laptop bag from the desk, ensuring the MicroSD card was safely stowed in her zipped interior coat pocket. She backed away from the front window toward the small, cramped bathroom at the rear of the cabin.
Outside, the heavy SUV stopped directly in front of Room 114—Emily's room.
The headlights cut off, plunging the parking lot back into pitch darkness, save for the flickering amber glow of the buzzing neon sign. Two heavy car doors clicked open and shut in synchronized, military precision.
Emily ducked into the bathroom, closing the door until only a hair-thin crack remained open. She lowered Lily gently into the dry porcelain bathtub, kneeling down beside her.
"Stay down, cover your ears," Emily whispered, kissing Lily’s forehead.
Through the crack in the bathroom door, Emily watched the silhouette of the front room window.
THUD. THUD. THUD.
The heavy, rhythmic knocking echoed through the door, rattling the cheap wooden frame.
"Mrs. Sterling?" a deep, gravelly voice called out from the darkness outside. "This is Private Security for the Sterling Trust. Your husband is concerned for your safety. Please open the door so we can assist you."
Emily didn't answer. She squeezed her eyes shut, her body pressed flat against the cold bathroom tile floor.
A pause. Then, the sound of a metal passkey being inserted into the lock.
The electronic lock beeped green. The door handle turned.
BANG.
The wooden chair Emily had jammed beneath the handle held for a second, splintering loudly under the sudden pressure from outside. But a second heavy shove shattered the cheap wooden legs of the chair, and the front door swung wide open, letting in a draft of freezing, rain-soaked air.
Two tall men dressed in tactical rain jackets and dark baseball caps stepped into the room. One carried a heavy flash-light; the other kept his right hand shoved deep inside his jacket pocket, his posture lowered in a shooter's stance.
"Room's clear in the main area," the man with the flashlight whispered, his beam sweeping across the unmade bed, the empty desk, and the discarded laptop charger on the floor.
The flashlight beam moved slowly across the room, tracking toward the closed bathroom door.
"Check the head," the second man commanded in a cold, professional tone.
The footsteps approached the bathroom door. Heavy, wet boots squeaked against the thin laminate flooring.
Emily’s heart was hammering so loudly she was certain they could hear it through the wood. She looked down at Lily in the bathtub. The little girl had her eyes closed tight, her tiny hands pressed firmly over her ears, exactly as her mother had instructed.
Emily’s hand searched the dark floor around her. Her fingers brushed against the porcelain toilet tank lid.
Slowly, silently, she wrapped both hands around the heavy porcelain slab. It weighed at least fifteen pounds, its underside cold and rough against her fingers.
She pulled herself up onto her knees, lifting the heavy lid above her right shoulder.
The bathroom door was kicked inward with a violent crash.
The beam of the flashlight blinded her for a fraction of a second, illuminating Emily standing beside the doorway like a vengeful specter.
Before the operative could raise his weapon, Emily swung the fifteen-pound porcelain lid with every ounce of motherly rage, adrenaline, and terror stored in her body.
CRACK.
The edge of the porcelain lid smashed directly into the side of the first operative’s head. The force of the impact shattered the porcelain into three pieces, spraying white fragments across the bathroom tile.
The man let out a wet, choked grunt as his head snapped violently to the side. His knees buckled instantly, his flashlight dropping to the floor, and he collapsed sideways into the doorway like a felled oak.
"What the—" the second man shouted from the bedroom, raising his suppressed handgun.
Emily didn't give him the chance to aim. She lunged forward out of the dark bathroom, grabbing the heavy metal floor lamp standing beside the nightstand, and thrust it like a spear directly into the second man’s face.
The sharp metal edge caught him across the bridge of his nose, blinding him with blood and sending him staggering backward through the open front door onto the wet, rain-slicked walkway outside.

"Lily! Run!" Emily screamed.
She grabbed Lily out of the bathtub, hauled the child onto her shoulder, snatched her laptop bag from the floor, and sprinted out the open front door into the storm.
