Chapter 13 - THE DECISION AT HAMPSTEAD

Henri plugged the micro USB drive into a secured terminal on his desk. The high-resolution screens instantly sprang to life, displaying lines of green code scrolling rapidly down black windows.

Daniel stood behind the old man, watching the data stream across the monitor. Sophie had fallen asleep in the large leather chair, wrapped in the wool blanket, her breathing steady and deep for the first time in hours.

"It will take four minutes to execute the overwrite," Henri said, his fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard with surprising speed for a man his age. "Once the script finishes, the ledger on the Zurich server will be corrupted beyond recovery. Moretti will never see the account numbers. The syndicate will have no reason to hunt you or your daughter."

"And the police?" Daniel asked. "What about the evidence of Julian’s murder? What about Victoria?"

Henri paused, his fingers hovering over the enter key. He looked up at Daniel through his round spectacles.

"That is the choice you must make now, my friend," Henri said softly. "This drive contains two separate command files. File A is a complete wipe. It erases everything—the ledger, the murder evidence, the financial records, the paper trail that links Vivienne to Julian, and the record of Victoria’s disappearance. It leaves you with a clean slate. You take Sophie, you change your names, you move to Switzerland or New Zealand, and you live in peace."

"And File B?" Daniel asked.

"File B executes the wipe on the Zurich server," Henri explained, pointing to a second red button on the screen. "But it simultaneously routes the decrypted murder evidence and the financial records directly to the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and the Italian Anti-Mafia Directorate. Vivienne will be exposed posthumously. Julian’s true killer will be recorded. The Moretti syndicate will be dismantled by federal authorities over the next six months."

"And what happens to us if I choose File B?" Daniel asked.

"If you choose File B," Henri said grimly, "you will have to testify. You will be in witness protection for years. You will live under an assumed name, under constant guard, moving from safehouse to safehouse until the trials are finished. And Moretti’s men will never stop looking for the man who signed the warrant."

Daniel looked back at his sleeping daughter.

In the dim light of the gas fire, the jagged patch of hair on the side of her head looked like a dark, open wound. It was a physical mark left by seven years of lies, seven years of silent suffering endured by a family that had been torn apart from the inside out.

If he chose File A, he was choosing safety, but he was also choosing silence. He was choosing to let the world believe that Victoria was a unstable woman who had abandoned her child, that Julian Vance was an innocent victim of a accident, and that Vivienne was just a cousin who had mysteriously vanished.

"Where is Victoria?" Daniel asked quietly. "If I press File B... where does she go?"

Henri hesitated, reaching for his pipe. "Victoria is in a small village near Saint-Malo, on the coast of Brittany. She is living under the name Claire Laurent—my niece’s alias. She is waiting for the signal."

"What signal?"

"The signal that tells her whether her husband chose safety..." Henri said, looking Daniel dead in the eye, "...or whether he chose justice."
