THE SILENT ROOTS OF DECEIT / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - THE COST OF TRUTH

The silence in the Hampstead room was heavy, broken only by the soft hum of the computer fans and the rhythmic ticking of a brass carriage clock on the mantelpiece.

Daniel walked over to the window, pulling aside a corner of the heavy velvet curtain.

Outside, the rain had finally stopped. The street below was dark, illuminated only by the warm, amber glow of the gas-style streetlamps. A dark sedan was idling near the corner of the avenue, its headlights off, its exhaust forming small white plumes in the cold night air.

Eleanor’s team had tracked them. It hadn't taken them long to cross-reference Henri’s address from Victoria’s old records. They were waiting outside, waiting to see who walked out of the house.

"They're on the street," Daniel said flatly.

Henri didn't look surprised. "They won't attack this house directly. Not while the street cameras at the end of the lane are operational. They are waiting for us to move."

"They don't know we have the drive," Daniel said, turning back to the desk. "They think we are panicked. They think we are looking for a place to hide."

He walked over to the terminal, standing above the aged archivist. His eyes were cold, clear, and utterly resolute. The fear that had gripped him in the dressing room when he first read Victoria’s note was entirely gone, replaced by a dark, unbreakable purpose.

"Select File B," Daniel said.

Henri looked up, a flicker of surprise in his old eyes. "Daniel... think carefully. Once the transmission begins, there is no recall. You will be committing yourself and Sophie to a life in the shadows for years."

"My wife lived in the shadows for seven years to protect my daughter," Daniel said, reaching down and placing his hand over Henri’s on the mouse. "I am not going to let her sacrifice be reduced to an insurance policy that lets me live comfortably in Switzerland. The truth has a cost, Henri. I am ready to pay it."

Henri watched him for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "Very well, my friend."

Henri clicked the red icon labeled File B - Execute Transmission.

The screen flashed bright yellow, followed by a dark green progress bar that began to fill rapidly.

TRANSMITTING ENCRYPTED DOSSIER TO: DIREZIONE INVESTIGATIVA ANTIMAFIA - ROMA...

"The transmission will complete in ninety seconds," Henri said, standing up from his chair and walking toward a small wooden cabinet near the fireplace. He opened the cabinet and pulled out two objects: a heavy silver-plated revolver and a set of car keys. "The sedan outside belongs to Moretti’s scouts. But they don't know about the underground garage that connects this cellar to the old coach house on the next street."

Daniel took the car keys. He walked over to the armchair and gently picked up Sophie, wrapping the wool blanket securely around her small frame. The child stirred slightly, opening her eyes, looking up at him with a tired, trusting gaze.

"Daddy?" she murmured.

"It’s okay, sweetheart," Daniel whispered, kissing her forehead right above the jagged line of her haircut. "We’re going to see Mommy."
