Chapter 9 - THE TACTICAL RETREAT

Downstairs, the knocking stopped.

In its place came a dull, metallic clicking sound—the sound of a high-grade lock-picking tool working its way through the double-deadbolt system of the front entrance. The heavy security door that Daniel had installed two years ago to keep out intruders was being bypassed in seconds by someone who understood high-end architecture better than the locksmiths who built it.

"We have two minutes," Daniel said, his voice dropping into the cold, analytical tone he used during corporate crises. He stood up, shoving the micro USB drive into his pocket alongside the silver key and Victoria’s letter.

He looked down at Vivienne on the floor. She was clutching her bleeding hand, shivering violently, paralyzed by the sheer terror of what was waiting on the ground floor.

"Get up," Daniel ordered.

"It’s no use," Vivienne whimpered, staring at the floor. "Eleanor doesn't leave survivors. She’s thorough. She’ll search every room; she’ll check the cameras; she’ll track our phones."

"I said get up!" Daniel grabbed her by the lapels of her beige suit jacket and hauled her to her feet with enough force to snap her head back. "If you want to die here, that’s your choice. But you are going to walk downstairs first and buy us twenty seconds."

Vivienne looked at him in shock. "You're using me as a distraction?"

"You brought them to my house," Daniel said, his eyes hard as flint. "You terrorized my daughter. You destroyed my wife's life. You owe us more than twenty seconds."

He didn't wait for her response. He grabbed Sophie’s hand, picking the little girl up in his left arm, cradling her against his chest. With his right hand, he reached into the vanity drawer and pulled out a heavy brass letter opener—a long, sharp souvenir from an auction in Paris. It wasn't a gun, but it was steel.

"Run to the back stairs," Daniel whispered to himself, shifting his weight toward the secondary doorway that led to the servants' corridor—a narrow, poorly lit passage built behind the main master bedroom wall that descended directly into the kitchen pantry.

Behind them, the front door downstairs clicked open.

The heavy thud of soft-soled boots hit the marble of the main foyer. There were no voices, no shouted commands, no dramatic announcements. Just the calm, methodical sound of professionals entering a target environment.

"Daniel..." Vivienne squeaked, her voice trembling as she stood alone in the center of the dressing room.

"Make your choice, Vivienne," Daniel said from the dark opening of the servant passage. "Die on your knees, or take one step forward."

He didn't watch to see what she did. He pulled the narrow wooden door shut behind him, plunging himself and Sophie into absolute darkness.

The air inside the wall cavity was cool and smelt of damp plaster and old timber. Daniel moved swiftly, navigating the narrow wooden steps by memory, his right hand sliding along the unpainted brick wall to guide his descent. Sophie held her breath, her tiny arms wrapped tightly around his neck, her face buried in the crook of his collarbone.

Above them, in the master suite, a sudden sound echoed through the hollow wall.

It was a sharp, suppressed pop—a sound like a champagne cork being drawn under a heavy blanket.

Then another. Pop.

Silence returned to the house, heavy and final.

Vivienne Vance was no longer a factor in the equation.
