Chapter 10 - The Labyrinth Below

The basement of the Blackwood Estate was an expansive, century-old labyrinth of stone archways, wine cellars, and utility vaults built directly into the sea cliff. The air down here was cold and thick with the smell of damp earth, aged oak, and now, a growing trace of acrid smoke drifting from the electrical room.
Julian moved quickly through the dark corridors, using the wall as a guide. His ears strained for any sound—the crackle of fire, the sound of his daughter crying, or the footsteps of a monster that refused to die.
Suddenly, a dull EXPLOSION rocked the house above.
The floor above him shook violently, sending a shower of fine plaster dust down onto his head. The main electrical control panel on the ground floor had exploded, cutting off the last remnants of power to the automated systems. The emergency vents snapped shut, trapping the heat and smoke inside the mansion.
"Daddy?" a tiny, frightened voice called out from the dark.
Julian rushed toward the sound, turning a corner into the private wine cellar. Behind a row of massive, hundred-year-old oak storage casks, a small wooden door sat flush against the stone wall.
"Lily!" Julian knelt by the small door, hammering his fist gently against the wood. "It's me! Open the door, baby!"
The small iron latch clicked, and the door creaked open. Lily threw herself out of the small alcove, wrapping her arms around Julian’s waist, sobbing hysterically.
"I heard a big boom, Daddy! Is the house falling?"
"No, sweetheart, the house is fine," Julian lied desperately, picking her up and tucking her head under his chin. "We're going to get out through the sea cave entrance. Hold onto me tightly."

He turned back toward the main corridor that led to the lower utility tunnel—the only exit that didn't rely on electronic keycards.
As he stepped out from between the wine barrels, a dark shadow stepped out from the archway, blocking the corridor.
