Chapter 3 - The Mask Crumbles

Valentina took a slow, deliberate breath. The shock in her eyes dissolved, replaced in a fraction of a second by a calculated, cold composure that made Julian’s blood run cold. She did not tremble. She did not cry. Instead, she set her own wine glass down on the wooden table with a soft, precise click.

She stood up slowly, smoothing the front of her black silk dress with her palms. Her emerald earrings caught the candlelight, casting green, serpentine glints across her neck.

"Julian, please, listen to yourself," Valentina said softly, her voice taking on a soothing, maternal tone that sounded entirely artificial. She took a step toward them, extending a hand filled with false sympathy. "The child is hysterical. She’s seven years old, Julian! She lost her mother three years ago, she has nightmares, she watches far too much television—"

"Don't take another step!" Julian roared, his hand slamming down onto the heavy slate table with enough force to rattle the remaining silverware.

Lily squeaked in fear, burying her face into her father’s hip.

"Look at the floor, Valentina!" Julian snarled, his chest heaving as adrenaline surged through his veins. He pointed a shaking finger at the white, chemical sludge still sizzling against the marble. "That isn't wine! That is a high-yield cytotoxic agent! Is this what you gave me two years ago?! Answer me!"

Valentina’s eyes flicked down to the floor, then back to Julian. Seeing that her calm, reasonable persona was failing, her posture shifted. She stopped advancing, her shoulders rising slightly as a sharp, defensive edge crept into her demeanor.

"She’s just a child!" Valentina shouted back, her voice raising a octave higher, laced with panic and mounting frustration. "She’s lying! She’s confused! She’s always hated me because I replaced her mother! You’re going to take the word of a traumatized seven-year-old over your own wife?!"

"She didn't pour the poison into my glass, Valentina! You did!" Julian took a step forward, shielding Lily behind his body. "You served the wine. You poured it from the decanter in the pantry! No one else touched that bottle!"

"I poured it from the bottle you bought!" Valentina screamed, stepping back as Julian approached. Her eyes darted toward the grand arched doorway leading to the main foyer. "If there’s something wrong with the wine, it’s a manufacturing fault! Or perhaps your own security team modified it! Why are you attacking me?!"

"Because you were my doctor!" Julian shouted, the painful truth tearing through his soul like jagged glass. "Because you knew every detail of my medical file! You knew cyanide poisoning presents symptoms identical to acute myocardial infarction in patients with pre-existing heart conditions! You didn't just want me dead, Valentina... you wanted the coroner to sign the death certificate without an autopsy!"
