Chapter 10 - The Reckoning of Steel

The unraveling of Vanguard-Aegis North America took less than seventy-two hours.

Federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants across twelve states, arresting forty-two senior executives, structural engineers, and corrupt municipal inspectors. The multi-billion-dollar corporate conspiracy that had threatened the structural integrity of major American cities was completely dismantled.

In a federal holding cell in downtown Chicago, Arthur Pendelton sat across from federal prosecutors, signing a full confession in exchange for avoiding a treason charge.

Back in Oregon, the morning sun broke through the storm clouds over Cannon Beach.

Eleanor Vance stood on the porch of the coastal home, watching Lily run along the sand with a young golden retriever they had adopted the week before. The child’s laughter carried over the sound of the surf—bright, clear, and unburdened by the past.

Marcus walked out onto the porch, handing Eleanor a fresh cup of coffee.

"It's clean, Eleanor," Marcus said softly. "Every node in North America has been shut down. The Department of Justice released their final press summary five minutes ago. Your sister's name has been officially cleared in the congressional record."

Eleanor took a sip of her coffee, feeling the warm sea breeze against her face.

The nine-iron that had smashed into the marble floor at the Sterling Residence, the dark secrets hidden in high-rise towers, the cold fear that had haunted her life for years... all of it had finally burned down to ash.

"What will you do now, Eleanor?" Marcus asked gently.

Eleanor turned to look at her uncle, a real, radiant smile illuminating her face.

"I'm going to teach Lily how to build a sailboat," Eleanor said softly. "One that will never break."

She walked down the porch steps into the warm sand, running toward the child whose life she had saved, leaving the shadows of the past behind her forever.
