Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Mirror

The sound of the helicopter blades grew louder, shaking the heavy glass windows of the penthouse.
Victoria’s posture, once so rigid and imposing, began to fracture. Her breath came in short, jagged gasps as she looked from the black smartphone on the counter to the red-lit ceiling speakers still playing the damning audio logs.
"You think you've won?" Victoria spat, her voice rising to a hysterical shriek. She lowered the golf club, holding it with both hands like a baseball bat. "You're a fake! A maid! A nobody from Oregon!"
"I am the sister of the woman you murdered," Eleanor said, stepping forward. "And I am the officer who just sealed your federal indictment."
Julian slowly looked up from the floor, his face wet with tears. "Eleanor... please. I didn't kill Hannah. I tried to stop Victoria! I gave her family money for the funeral!"
"You bought their silence, Julian," Eleanor said, not even looking down at him. "You were complicit. Every time you turned a blind eye to your wife's violence—against Hannah, against Clara, against your own daughter—you signed your name to her crimes."
"Daddy!" Lily cried again from behind Eleanor’s legs.
The child's voice seemed to snap something inside Julian. The weak, terrified corporate executive suddenly lunged forward—not toward Eleanor, but toward his wife.
"Give me that!" Julian roared, grabbing the shaft of the golf club.
"Get off me, you coward!" Victoria shrieked, kicking her high heel into Julian’s shin.
The two struggled violently in the middle of the luxury kitchen. The nine-iron swung wildly between them, smashing into the dark gray modular cabinets, shattering glass doors and sending crystal barware crashing to the marble floor in a shower of glittering shards.
Eleanor didn't hesitate. She swept Lily into her arms, covering the child's head with her apron, and sprinted back toward the private elevator hallway.
"Clara! Don't leave me!" Julian screamed as Victoria bit his forearm, forcing him to release the club.
Victoria whirled around, her hair completely unraveled from its bun, hanging in wild, silver strands around her flushed, sweat-stained face. She raised the golf club high above her head, her maroon dress torn at the shoulder, looking like a demonic vision of fallen aristocracy.
"Nobody leaves this penthouse!" Victoria roared, rushing down the hallway toward Eleanor and the child.
Eleanor reached the heavy iron doors of the private elevator. She slapped her palm against the reader—not with the maid’s access card, but with a high-level master key fob she had pulled from her pocket.
The elevator doors chimed and began to slide open.
Inside the elevator stood three men in tactical vests bearing the bright yellow lettering of the UNITED STATES MARSHALS.
Victoria slammed to a halt five feet away, her golf club raised in mid-air, her bloodshot eyes widening in absolute horror as she stared into the barrels of three tactical rifles.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP THE WEAPON!" the lead Marshal commanded, his voice echoing off the narrow hallway walls like thunder.
May you like
Victoria’s arms trembled. The golf club felt impossibly heavy. She looked past the armed agents to Eleanor, who stood calmly inside the safety of the elevator, holding the sobbing Lily close to her heart.
The metallic head of the nine-iron slipped from Victoria’s fingers, crashing onto the marble floor with a final, echoing clatter.
