Chapter 1 - The Strike

The grand foyer of the Sterling estate was a monument to excess, smelling perpetually of polished mahogany, old money, and the cloying, suffocating sweetness of imported lilies. Clara stood on the gleaming hardwood floor, her light blue maid’s uniform and stiff white apron looking like a deliberate affront to the opulence surrounding her. Above them, a massive crystal chandelier cast warm, fractured amber light across the soaring archways and vaulted ceilings. But Clara had never cared about the aesthetics of wealth; to her, this house was a cage of gilded bars, and everyone inside it was merely waiting for the door to open or shut.

Eleanor Vance stood before her like an open wound wrapped in silk. Clad in a floor-length red satin dress with a high side slit, Eleanor radiated a volatile, aristocratic heat. Her face was twisted into a snarl of pure, unadulterated class entitlement. She viewed the staff not as people, but as furnishings that occasionally required dusting or disciplining.

Without warning, Eleanor’s arm whipped through the air, her palm aimed squarely at Clara’s face—a reflex born of the absolute conviction that those who served never had the right to defend themselves.

Clara did not flinch. Her reflexes, sharpened by a past she kept buried beneath a mask of submissive employment, were instantaneous. Her hand shot upward with terrifying precision, catching Eleanor’s wrist mid-swing and locking it in an iron grip. Before Eleanor could even register the shock of blocked momentum, Clara’s free hand swung back and retaliated with a resounding, vicious crack. The kinetic force of the open-handed blow echoed off the marble pillars, sending Eleanor spinning completely off balance. Her high heels buckled, and she crashed hard onto the polished wooden floor, her pristine red dress pooling around her like spilled wine.
