Chapter 9 - The Shift in Power

Richard froze mid-stride. The absolute lack of panic in Clara’s voice struck a raw nerve. People who stole panicked when threatened with searches; they didn't invite scrutiny with calm confidence.
Eleanor, still kneeling on the floor, noticed the hesitation in Richard’s posture and lost whatever remaining shreds of her composure she had left. "What are you waiting for, Richard? Call them! Make her empty her pockets right now!" she screamed, her voice losing its aristocratic polish and devolving into raw, primal panic.
Richard ignored her, his eyes locked onto Clara’s dark pupils. The power dynamic in the foyer had completely inverted. In the span of a few heartbeat-driven seconds, the maid had transformed from a subordinate into an adversary, and the master of the house realized he was walking blindfolded into a trap of his own making.
