Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Boardroom

The lobby atmosphere shifted from tense drama to absolute, panic-driven paralysis.
The glass elevators on the far side of the atrium suddenly buzzed in unison. The illuminated floor indicators flared bright red. All eight elevator cabs descended rapidly from the top floor—the Executive Suite—and hit the ground floor simultaneously with a heavy, pneumatic thud.
The doors slid open. Out poured a dozen men and women in tailored dark suits, flanked by four armed corporate security officers carrying heavy black executive cases. At the head of the group was Marcus Kane, the current Chief Executive Officer of Vance Financial.
Kane’s face was slick with sweat. His silk tie was pulled loose at the collar, and his hands were trembling as he sprinted across the polished floor, ignoring the dozens of staff members staring at him in utter disbelief.
"Sir!" Kane gasped, coming to a dead halt three feet from Arthur. He immediately bowed his head, his voice breathless and terrified. "Mr. Vance. We... we received the priority override code from your encrypted terminal. We didn't realize... we didn't know you were on-site."
"Of course you didn't, Marcus," Arthur said coldly, folding his arms across his broad chest. "You were too busy approving your forty-million-dollar performance bonus while cutting the maintenance budget by thirty percent. You told the board that structural efficiency had improved. In reality, you just created an environment where sociopaths like Ms. Sterling here could thrive."
Victoria backed away, her high heels clicking erratically against the stone. She looked at Kane, hoping for some intervention, some denial, but the CEO was cowering before the old man in the green shirt like a schoolboy caught stealing from the till.
"Marcus," Victoria stammered, her voice high and panicked. "Marcus, what is this? Who is he?"
Kane didn't look at her. He kept his eyes fixed firmly on the floor. "Shut your mouth, Victoria," he hissed through clenched teeth. "That is the owner of this building. That is the owner of your contract. That is the man who owns everything you have ever touched in this city."
Julian stood completely frozen between them. He looked from Arthur to Kane, his mind struggling to process the seismic shift occurring in front of him. The old man who he had just tried to defend from a spilled cup of coffee was the absolute ruler of the financial leviathan he worked for.
Arthur turned his gaze slowly back to Victoria. The air around them seemed to drop five degrees.

"Seven years ago," Arthur said softly, his voice carrying to every corner of the vast, silent atrium, "I stepped down because I realized this institution was rotted from the inside. I realized that the people managing my money had lost all connection to basic human decency. So I made a decision. I would clean my own building. I would observe every director, every manager, every analyst, from the ground up."
He stepped closer to Victoria, his gray eyes piercing right through her. "And in seven years, Ms. Sterling, I have never seen a display of pure, unadulterated malice as pathetic as the one you just provided."
