Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

Victoria staggered back, her hand flying to her mouth as tears of absolute terror finally overflowed her eyes. Two of the armed security officers stepped forward, placing themselves directly behind her, their posture rigid, blocking any path to the exit.
"Marcus!" she screamed, looking at the CEO. "Help me! You signed off on those transfers! You knew about the Caymans!"
Marcus Kane’s face paled, but before he could speak, Arthur placed a heavy, weathered hand on Kane’s shoulder. The grip was so firm that Kane visibly winced.
"Don't worry, Victoria," Arthur said softly. "Marcus isn't going anywhere either. His audit begins at noon. The federal prosecutors are already waiting in Conference Room A."
Kane looked as if he were about to throw up on the polished marble. He closed his eyes and nodded silently, completely defeated.
Arthur turned away from them, his attention shifting entirely away from the fallen executives. He walked slowly toward Julian, who was still standing near the teak bench, his laptop bag slung over his shoulder, looking like a man who had stumbled into the middle of a private war.
The old billionaire stopped eighteen inches from the young analyst. The hardened, merciless expression that had crushed Victoria and Kane instantly vanished, replaced by a warm, tired gentleness in Arthur’s gray eyes.
"What is your name, son?" Arthur asked softly.
Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry. "Julian. Julian Vance, sir. No relation... to you, I mean. It's just a coincidence."
"There are no coincidences in this building, Julian," Arthur said, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "I’ve been watching you for six months. I saw you stay until midnight three times last week helping the night cleaning crew move heavy furniture out of the basement offices without asking for overtime. And today, you put your entire career on the line to stand up for an old man with a mop."
Julian lowered his head slightly. "I just... I couldn't watch her do that to you. It wasn't right."
"No," Arthur agreed, his voice echoing in the quiet atrium. "It wasn't right. Courage is a rare commodity in this building, Julian. Most people trade it for a corner office and a six-figure bonus before their thirty-fifth birthday."
Arthur reached out and touched the battered leather bag hanging from Julian’s shoulder. "What's in the bag?"
"It's... accounting software, sir," Julian stammered. "A tracking code I wrote. I noticed anomalies in the risk department's quarterly reporting two months ago. I was trying to figure out how to report it without getting fired."
Arthur looked at the bag, then raised his eyes to meet Julian’s. A bright, sharp spark of pride flashed in the old man's eyes.
"You found it on your own?" Arthur asked.
"Yes, sir."
Arthur turned back to the legal team and the terrified board members standing near the elevators.
"David," Arthur called out.
"Yes, Mr. Vance?" the attorney answered immediately.

"Effective immediately, Ms. Sterling is terminated for cause, arrested for grand larceny, and stripped of all stock options," Arthur announced loudly. "And cancel Marcus Kane’s voting rights on the executive committee."
He turned back to Julian. "And draft a new employment agreement for this young man. Position: Chief Risk Officer. Starting salary: two million dollars, with full authority to restructure the entire compliance division."
