Chapter 1 - The Silver Weight on Mahogany

The crystal chandelier overhead didn't just illuminate the room; it bled light across the polished mahogany panels, casting long, fractured shadows across the Persian carpet.

The air smelled of aged bourbon, expensive French tobacco, and the cold, metallic tang of absolute panic.

Elena stood behind the high-backed velvet armchair, her fingers buried in the links of a heavy, diamond-encrusted silver chain.

The metal was cold against her knuckles, but it burned with a fierce, proprietary heat.

She pulled the chain taut.

The links groaned softly as they bit into the high-collared navy velvet of Beatrice’s gown.

Beatrice, whose silver hair was pinned with heirloom pearls, leaned backward, her spine forced into an unnatural, painful arch against the carved lion-head crest of the ancestral chair.

Her breath came in short, ragged gasps that rattled in her chest like dry leaves.

A collective intake of breath swept through the room, a sharp wave of collective air leaving the lungs of fifty black-tie-clad guests standing in a breathless semicircle.

No one moved.

No one stepped forward to break the line of the unspoken social contract that bound them to the silence of the elite.

The room was a theater of expensive fabrics and frozen expressions, where a silver chain could be pulled as casually as drawing a curtain.
