Chapter 5 - The Transfer of Metal

Julian stopped two paces away from Elena.
The air between them was thick with an invisible, suffocating static.
He reached out.
His fingers, long and cold, brushed against Elena’s skin as he took the ends of the silver chain from her grasp.
The metal transferred from one warm hand to another with a soft, metallic jingle.
Beatrice raised her head, her eyes milky with exhaustion and betrayal, fixing them on her son.
"Julian..."
The name was a dry scrape of air against her throat.
"Julian, tell her. Tell her this has gone far enough."
Julian did not look down at his mother.
He stood rigid, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently beneath his cleanly shaved cheek.
He wrapped the chain around his palm once, twice, burying the diamonds in his clenched fist until the sharp edges bit into his flesh.
He looked at Elena instead.
There was no warmth in his gaze, only a desperate, transactional surrender.
"The house has a new ledger," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of inflection.

Beatrice let out a low, whimpering sound, her head dropping back against Martha’s chest as the final anchor of her authority was sawed through.
