Chapter 3 - The Linen Shield

A blur of white and black broke the perimeter of the silent audience.
Martha, the young head maid, lunged forward with a desperate, uncalculated speed that shattered the formal choreography of the room.
Her crisp white collar was askew, and her black skirt tangled around her shins as she threw herself between Elena and the high-backed chair.
She wrapped her arms around Beatrice’s shoulders, pulling the old woman forward to relieve the crushing tension of the silver chain.
"Stop it! Please, stop it!" Martha’s voice broke, raw and trembling, bouncing off the vaulted ceilings.
Elena didn't strike the maid.
She simply stepped back, letting the chain slide through her gloved fingers with a dry, metallic hiss.
Her lips curved into a cold, paper-thin smile.
She lifted her hand, dangling the shimmering silver loop in the air like a pendulum before a hypnotized audience.
"Loyalty is a poor substitute for ownership, girl," Elena said softly, her voice dripping with casual disdain.
Beatrice slumped against Martha’s shoulder, coughing weakly, her fingers clutching the damp fabric of the maid's uniform.

The silver hairpins slipped from her bun, scattering two small pearls onto the hardwood floor where they rolled away, ignored by everyone.
