Chapter 1 - The Fracture in the Foundation

In a luxurious, brightly lit white hallway with classical wall moldings and a crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, a young maid in a black-and-white uniform and yellow rubber gloves stands in a wide stance, holding a sledgehammer mid-swing against a damaged section of the drywall. In the background, a group of wealthy guests in formal evening wear—including a man in a tuxedo and women in elegant dresses—look on with expressions of shock and horror. The camera is static, capturing a medium-wide shot with a shallow depth of field, focusing on the maid's intense expression.
The air in the grand gallery of St. Jude Estate was suffocating, thick with the scent of vintage champagne, expensive floral perfumes, and fine cigar smoke. Beneath the warm, golden glow of the crystal chandelier, the city’s high society milled about, laughing at quiet jokes and adjusting their diamond cufflinks. But that pristine facade shattered the second Clara swung the heavy steel sledgehammer.
Clara’s hands, encrusted inside bright yellow rubber gloves, tightened around the worn hickory handle. Sweat dripped down the back of her neck, staining the stiff collar of her black-and-white maid's uniform. She didn't look at the billionaires backing away in terror, their silk gowns rustling against the marble floorboards. She only stared at the hairline crack she had spent three agonizing weeks discovering—a secret seam hidden behind the ornate plaster moldings.
"Clara, stop this madness!" a voice bellowed from the back of the hallway.

Clara ignored the command entirely. Raising the eight-pound iron head over her shoulder, she put every ounce of her body weight into a second, furious blow. The steel struck the pristine drywall with a deafening boom that vibrated through the floorboards and rattled the glass crystals suspended high above. White plaster erupted into the air like a cloud of ash, settling over the polished mahogany floor and dusting the leather shoes of the onlookers.
The drywall caved in with a wet, splintering crunch. Cracks spread across the classical wall like spiderwebs, exposing a dark, stagnant void hidden deep inside the hollow architecture of the estate. Gasps rippled through the crowd as a rush of cold, foul air blew out from the darkness—an air that smelled of ancient insulation, mold, and rot. Clara swung a third time, tearing away a massive chunk of sheetrock to reveal the dark tomb sealed within.
