Chapter 7 - The Evidence of the Dark

At the sight of the blinking red light, Evelyn let out a choked shriek and collapsed onto her knees, her blue silk dress spreading across the floorboards.

"Turn it off!" she screamed, her nails dragging across the marble as she tried to crawl toward them. "Julian, destroy it! He's crazy! He's making things up! Don't listen to him!"

Julian didn't look at her. He reached out with a trembling hand, supporting his son's small wrist as his thumb hovered over the playback button on the side of the black box.

"Play it, son," Julian commanded gently.

The boy pressed the button.

A short burst of static hissed from the small speaker, followed immediately by a voice that was undeniably Evelyn's—sharp, cold, and entirely devoid of the panic she was currently displaying:

"Keep him in the south wall cavity, Clara. The framing is thick enough that his cries won't reach the main hall. As soon as Julian signs the final deed transfer over to my name, we can quiet him permanently. If he speaks, cut his rations."

Another voice, belonging to the estate's private physician, crackled through the speaker: "And the death certificate?"

Evelyn's recorded voice chuckled darkly: "Julian is so blinded by grief he'll believe whatever I tell him. He thinks his son is in a cemetery."
