Chapter 13

The first pale streaks of gray light began to bleed across the eastern horizon, turning the black surface of the lake into a sheet of liquid steel. Maya sat on a wooden stool beside the workbench, the open bankers' boxes surrounding her like quiet sentinels of the past. The physical evidence of her father’s quiet resistance was overwhelming, sweeping away the last remnants of doubt and resentment that had poisoned her heart for years.

Tom sat nearby on an upturned crate, sipping lukewarm coffee from a thermos he had pulled from his duffel bag. Neither of them had spoken for hours, letting the silent testimony of the documents do the heavy lifting. The truth was no longer a mystery; it was a matter of public record, safely preserved in waterproof boxes away from Eleanor’s prying eyes and grasping hands.

"What do we do with all this, Tom?" Maya asked quietly, her voice hoarse from the long night of reading and remembering.

"We take it straight to Arthur’s office when the sun comes up," Tom replied, his tone steady and resolute. "Eleanor filed for emergency probate administration yesterday afternoon, claiming she had sole custody of his personal effects. With these bankers' boxes and the affidavits inside, her claim won't just be dismissed—it’ll trigger a full forensic audit of every account she’s touched in the last ten years."

Maya looked down at the blue legal folder resting on her lap, still holding the amended testament that Arthur had brandished in the foyer yesterday. The circle was closing. The trap her father had set—not to punish, but to protect—was fully sprung, and Eleanor’s meticulously constructed house of cards was about to collapse under the weight of undeniable proof.

She stood up, brushing a speck of dust from the beige dress she had worn through two days of emotional upheaval. She felt lighter now, as if the heavy fog that had enveloped her life since her father’s death had finally burned away in the cold light of dawn.

"Let’s go back," Maya said, a quiet determination hardening her features. "It’s time to take our house back."
