Chapter 3

The silence that followed Arthur’s statement felt heavier than the furniture anchoring the room. Eleanor stood frozen, her fingers digging involuntarily into the gray wool of her pinstripe lapel. The polished composure that had sustained her through years of managing Faraz’s household was fracturing, revealing a raw, desperate fury underneath. She looked at Arthur as if he were speaking a foreign language, refusing to accept the legal reality resting inside the cardboard folds of the blue folder.
Maya remained rooted to the spot, the beige fabric of her dress swaying slightly as she took a deep, shuddering breath. The grief that had consumed her moments ago was now tangled with a dizzying sense of disorientation. For months, Eleanor had systematically frozen her out of her father’s life, convincing neighborhood gossips and distant relatives that Maya was erratic, ungrateful, and entirely estranged. Now, standing in the very room where she had been told she was no longer welcome, the tide had turned in a single sentence.
Arthur unclasped the blue folder with practiced ease, sliding out a sheaf of heavy cream-colored paper covered in precise black text and fresh signatures. "The amended testament was filed and notarized three weeks prior to his passing," Arthur explained quietly, directing his words as much to the room at large as to Eleanor specifically. "Every asset, including the primary residence and the trust accounts, remains in Miss Faraz’s name."

Eleanor finally snapped out of her paralysis, stepping forward with a sharp intake of breath. "That’s impossible! He lacked the capacity—his medication—you drafted this behind my back!" Her voice rose in pitch, losing its polished edge and revealing the shrill panic of someone whose foundation had just been swept away.
Arthur didn’t blink. He simply met her gaze with an unyielding professionalism that spoke of countless similar disputes handled in quiet offices far away from public view. "Dr. Vance signed off on his cognitive assessment that very morning, Mrs. Vance," Arthur replied, using her maiden name with deliberate precision. "Everything is entirely legitimate."
