Chapter 5

Maya reached out, her fingers brushing the smooth cardboard surface of the blue folder. The touch grounded her. For the first time since receiving the hospital call at dawn, she felt the solid earth beneath her feet. She took the folder from Arthur’s hands, holding it against her chest as if it were a shield. The weight of it was negligible, yet it represented an entire universe of unfinished business, reconciliation, and the quiet ghost of a father who had protected her even after he was gone.
Eleanor turned on her heel, her pinstripe blazer swirling around her as she marched toward the grand staircase without another word. The sharp click of her heels against the hardwood was the only sound in the house, a furious retreat disguised as dignity. Neither Arthur nor Maya moved until the heavy oak door of the upstairs master suite slammed shut with a muffled thud that vibrated through the floorboards.
Arthur let out a slow, quiet breath, his professional mask slipping for just a fraction of a second to reveal a tired, human empathy in his eyes. "He loved you, you know," Arthur said softly, his voice losing its courtroom cadence and dropping into a gentle, paternal register. "Even when things were difficult between you both. He talked about you every time we met to review the portfolio."
Maya looked down at the blue folder, her thumb tracing the embossed gold seal of the legal firm on the cover. "He never returned my calls, Arthur. Not once in four years," she whispered, the old pain surfacing briefly before dissolving into the reality of the documents she now held.

"Because he was trying to protect you from her," Arthur explained, gesturing subtly toward the stairs. "He knew what she was planning long before any of us had the documentation to prove it. That folder contains not just the deed, but his personal journal from these last few months. Read it tonight."
Maya nodded slowly, the tears finally drying on her cheeks as a strange, quiet resolve settled into her chest. The house was hers now, but the true journey of understanding her father’s final choices was only just beginning. She looked up toward the bright hallway, then back at Arthur, ready to take the first step across the threshold into a future she had never expected to inherit.
