Chapter 1 - The Threshold

The afternoon sun beat down on the suburban streets, casting long, sharp shadows across the manicured lawns, but for Mark, the world had plunged into an icy, suffocating darkness. Adrenaline, thick and metallic-tasting, pumped frantically through his veins. He didn't bother turning off the engine of his truck; he simply threw it in park, leaving the door hanging open as he sprinted up the concrete driveway. He had felt it in his gut an hour ago—a creeping, sickening intuition that something was catastrophically wrong at home. He had abandoned his warehouse shift, ignoring his supervisor's shouts, driven by a primal fatherly instinct.

Now, standing on his own front porch, that dread solidified into sheer terror. The house was too quiet. He gripped the doorknob, finding it unlocked. With a fierce shove, he practically tore the heavy white front door off its hinges. The heavy thud of his brown work boots echoed like gunshots against the polished wooden floor of the entryway. He was a powerfully built young man, muscles coiled tight beneath his sweat-stained grey t-shirt and dark shorts, but right now, he felt paralyzed by the heavy, unnatural silence of his own home. It wasn't the peaceful quiet of a lazy Sunday; it was the breathless, suspended silence of a predator waiting in the tall grass.
