Chapter 2 - The Silence Broken

Mark took a hesitant step forward, his eyes struggling to adjust from the blinding outdoor glare to the warm, dim lighting of the living room. The air felt heavy, thick with unspoken violence. Then, his eyes locked onto the intricately patterned rug in the center of the room. The sight hit him with the force of a physical blow.

There lay his seven-year-old daughter, Lily. Her tiny frame, clad in a simple white t-shirt, was pinned brutally to the floor. She was writhing, her legs kicking out in a desperate, silent panic. Looming over her, pinning her down with shocking strength, was Eleanor—Mark’s mother-in-law. The elderly woman’s pale blue dress shirt was wrinkled, her usually immaculate silver-blonde hair unspooled around her face in wild strands. But it was her hands that made Mark’s blood run cold. One hand pinned the child's arms, while the other was clamped violently over Lily’s mouth, muffling the child's terrified, choking sobs. Eleanor’s face was contorted into a hideous mask of pure, unadulterated venom. She leaned in close to the child's ear, her teeth bared like an animal, and hissed a command that shattered the illusion of their family forever: "You saw nothing. Say it!"
