THE BLACK PURSE / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Trembling Finger

At the sound of her grandmother's voice, Lily’s crying violently hitched. She pulled back slightly from her father’s chest, her tear-streaked face pale as a ghost. She refused to look in Eleanor's direction; her eyes were wide with a terror that no seven-year-old should ever possess.

Instead, she slowly raised a small, trembling finger and pointed toward the far corner of the living room. Sitting on the leather office chair was Eleanor's purse—a large, heavy, black leather designer bag that the older woman guarded with her life and carried everywhere.

"Dad," Lily sobbed, her voice barely a whisper, choking on her own tears as she buried her face back into Mark's chest. "Dad... check her purse. Please, you have to check her purse!"
