Chapter 8 - The Revelation

The metal zipper felt cold against his calloused fingers. As Mark yanked it open, Eleanor let out a sharp, involuntary gasp—the sound of a cornered animal. Mark plunged his hand in and pulled out the contents, dumping them onto the wooden desk. Time seemed to stop entirely. His eyes widened, his pupils dilating in sheer, unadulterated horror as he took inventory of the nightmare before him.

Nestled among the mundane items like lipstick and tissues were objects that defied logic. There were two freshly printed, high-quality forged passports. One bore Eleanor's face under a different name, and the other bore Lily's photo, completely stripped of Mark's surname. Beside them lay a thick, heavy bundle of hundred-dollar bills wrapped in rubber bands. But the most horrifying item was a heavy-duty medical syringe, pre-filled with a clear, viscous liquid, carefully wrapped in a hand towel alongside a printed floorplan of Mark's own house. His and Lily's bedrooms were circled heavily in red ink.

"Why..." Mark breathed out, the word getting stuck in his suffocating throat. He slowly turned his head to look at the woman he had trusted, the woman he had called family for seven years. "Why is this in your bag?!"
