Chapter 10 - The Mastermind's Shadow

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black flash drive, tossing it onto the binder in front of Ryan.

"What's that?" Ryan whispered, staring at the plastic drive as if it were a venomous snake.

"That is the complete server log from Arthur Pendelton’s private cloud storage," Julian said smoothly. "You see, Arthur wasn't just your lawyer, Ryan. He was Clara’s lover for fifteen years."

Ryan’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated shock. "What... what did you say?"

"Arthur and Clara planned this whole thing long before you ever thought of using poison," Julian revealed, a cruel note of satisfaction in his voice. "Clara was never going to let you keep the money from Maya's trust. The moment Maya was out of the picture and you were arrested for her murder, Arthur was going to file a civil suit on Clara's behalf, seizing all your joint assets as compensation for her 'trauma'."

Ryan stared at Julian, his breath catching in his throat. "No... no, Clara loves me... she's my stepmother... she raised me!"

"Clara raised you to be a shield," Julian spat. "A stupid, arrogant shield that she could throw in front of a bullet when the law came knocking. She set you up, Ryan. She made sure you were the one buying the poison from Saint Thomas. She made sure your voice was caught on her recorder."

Ryan felt his world shatter into a million jagged pieces. The betrayal was complete, absolute, and suffocating. He had thought he was the puppet master, pulling the strings of his wife, his lawyer, and his stepmother to secure a fortune.

In reality, he was nothing more than a brainless pawn in a game played by two predators who had traded his life away without a second thought.

"They... they used me..." Ryan whispered, his voice hollow, empty of all life.

"They used your greed," Julian corrected, taking the flash drive back and slipping it into his pocket. "And now, all three of you are going to rot in the same federal facility."

"Wait!" Ryan yelled as Julian turned toward the door. "Julian, wait! I can testify against Arthur! I can give you everything on his illegal accounts! Just tell Maya... tell her I'm sorry!"

May you like

Julian stopped at the door, his hand resting on the heavy brass handle. He didn't turn around to face Ryan.

"Maya doesn't care about your apology, Ryan," Julian said softly. "She's already forgotten your name."
