Chapter 6 - The Sterile Confessional

The emergency room of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital smelled of antiseptic, burnt coffee, and ozone. High-mounted fluorescent lights hummed a low, continuous B-flat that vibrated straight through the temples.
Outside Trauma Bay 2, Julian stood rigid against the beige wall, his hands tucked deep into the pockets of his dark trousers. The front of his crisp white shirt was smudged with dark gray marble dust and a single, starburst stain of Maya’s blood along the right cuff. He hadn't wiped it away. He hadn't moved in forty-five minutes.
The heavy swinging doors swung open, and a physician in blue scrubs stepped out, snapping off a pair of latex gloves.
"Mr. Vance?"
Julian took two steps forward, his body taut as a coiled spring. "How is she? How is the baby?"
Dr. Aris Thorne wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, his expression a unreadable mask of clinical fatigue. "Your sister sustained severe blunt force trauma to her lower lumbar spine and a mild concussion. The placenta suffered a partial abruption from the impact of the fall."
Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. "Is the child..."
"We managed to stabilize the hemorrhage," Dr. Thorne interrupted smoothly, catching Julian’s shoulder before the man could collapse. "The fetal heart rate was dangerously low when she arrived, but the emergency administration of terbutaline halted the uterine contractions. For now, the baby is stable. But your sister is under strict bed rest. Any spike in her blood pressure could trigger immediate premature labor."
Julian let out a long, ragged exhale, his eyes dropping to the floor. "Thank God."
"However," Dr. Thorne added, his voice dropping into a lower, darker register, "we found something else during her blood panel."
Julian snapped his head up, his eyes narrowing instantly. "What?"
Dr. Thorne pulled a digital chart from under his arm and tapped the glass screen. "Her blood chemistry showed elevated levels of synthetic levothyroxine mixed with trace amounts of organophosphates. Someone has been micro-dosing her with metabolic disruptors for at least six weeks. It's what caused her dizzy spells... and likely why her balance was so compromised on those stairs."
A cold, terrifying chill washed over Julian’s spine, freezing the blood in his veins.
The fall hadn't just been an act of sudden violence on the courthouse steps. It was the final, messy stroke of a slow, meticulous execution that had been taking place inside Maya’s own home for months.
"Where is she now?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a deadly, hushed whisper.
May you like
"She's conscious. She's in Room 412," the doctor replied. "She's asking for you. But Mr. Vance... the police are waiting downstairs. They need a statement regarding the second victim."
Julian’s lips curved into a cold, cruel line. "Clara Mercer is not a victim, Doctor. She's a weapon that misfired."
