Chapter 9 - The Poisoner’s Ledger

The door to the interrogation room clicked open, and Julian Vance stepped inside. He was no longer wearing his dusty suit coat; he wore a crisp charcoal vest over a rolled-up white shirt, carrying a thick binder under his arm.
Detective Kane stood up, nodding respectfully to the Special Prosecutor. "He's all yours, Julian."
Kane stepped out, closing the heavy steel door behind him with a solid, echoing CLICK.
Julian didn't sit down. He walked slowly around the perimeter of the metal table, his footsteps echoing in the cramped room. He placed the heavy binder on the table directly in front of Ryan’s face.
"You always were a terrible strategist, Ryan," Julian said softly, his tone almost conversational. "You thought in straight lines. A simple divorce. A simple asset split. But when Maya refused to let you liquidate her family trust, you got creative."
Ryan didn't look up. He kept his forehead pressed against the table, his shoulders shaking with silent, desperate sobs. "I didn't want to hurt her... I just wanted the money... the firm was going under, Julian... I was broke!"
"You were greedy," Julian corrected sharply. "And stupidity always follows greed."
Julian flipped the binder open, revealing rows of bank statements, pharmacy receipts, and digital logbooks printed on crisp white paper.
"Do you know what this is?" Julian asked, tapping his finger against a highlighted line on the page. "This is the digital ledger from a compounding pharmacy in Saint Thomas. Purchased under a shell corporate account registered to your firm."
Ryan raised his head slowly, his eyes bloodshot, his nose running. "I don't know what that is."
"It's an order for twelve vials of liquid levothyroxine and organophosphate compounds," Julian said, his eyes burning into Ryan’s soul. "Delivered to your private postal box three miles from your house. We served a search warrant on your home office an hour ago, Ryan. We found the dropper bottles hidden inside the false lining of your leather briefcase."
Ryan closed his eyes, a ragged moan escaping his throat. "It wasn't supposed to kill her... it was just supposed to make her look unstable... to make her lose custody..."
"You were poisoning a pregnant woman!" Julian roared, his voice exploding inside the small room like a thunderclap, his hands slamming down onto the metal table with terrifying force.
The heavy table groaned under the blow. Ryan jumped in his chair, shrinking back against the wall as far as the handcuffs would allow.
"You were poisoning my sister and my unborn nephew!" Julian snarled, leaning over the table until his face was inches from Ryan’s. "And you thought you could hide behind Clara’s psychosis!"
"Please..." Ryan sobbed, tears streaming down his cheeks. "Julian, please... I'll plead guilty! I'll give up everything! Just don't let them put me in state prison... please!"

Julian stood up straight, smoothing down the front of his vest with absolute composure.
"Plead guilty?" Julian echoed, a dark, cold smile touching his lips. "Oh, no, Ryan. You're not getting a plea deal."
