Chapter 12 - The Hospital Balcony

The storm cleared by late afternoon, leaving the sky over St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital washed in brilliant hues of violet, pink, and gold.

On the fourth-floor private balcony, Maya sat in a wheelchair, wrapped in a plush wool blanket. Her hands rested gently on her stomach, feeling the strong, steady movements of her baby boy beneath her palms.

The IV line had been removed from her hand, replaced by a light bandage. Her skin had recovered its natural, healthy glow, the poison slowly flushed from her system by days of intensive medical therapy.

The glass door behind her slid open, and Julian walked out onto the balcony, carrying two paper cups of warm chamomile tea.

"You should be inside resting," Julian said softly, handing her one of the cups before leaning against the metal railing beside her.

"I needed fresh air," Maya replied, taking a sip of the warm tea, letting the steam warm her face. "I needed to see the sky without stone columns blocking it."

Julian looked down at his sister, a gentle smile softening the sharp lines of his face. "The grand jury returned a full indictment twenty minutes ago. Ryan, Clara, and Arthur are all facing life sentences without the possibility of parole."

Maya looked out over the city skyline, watching the distant lights of the streetlamps flicker to life in the gathering dusk.

"I felt him kick this morning, Julian," Maya whispered, her eyes shining with quiet tears. "A real kick. Strong."

Julian reached down, placing his large palm gently over her hands resting on her belly. He felt a soft, firm push from within.

"He's a Vance," Julian smiled softly. "He's stubborn. Just like his mother."

May you like

"I was so foolish, Julian," Maya said, her voice wavering slightly as she looked up at him. "I trusted Ryan. I brought him into our family. I let him make me feel small... make me feel like I was crazy."

"You weren't foolish, Maya," Julian said, his voice dropping into a serious, protective tone. "You were good. You loved someone with an open heart, and he used that good nature against you. That is his flaw, not yours."
