Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

Two years later.

The St. Jude Market in downtown Manhattan was bustling with life on a bright, crisp Saturday morning.

The stalls were overflowing with fresh produce, braided loaves of sourdough bread, colorful autumn flowers, and hot roasted chestnuts. The air was rich with the cheerful sounds of market vendors shouting their daily prices, children laughing as they ran between the stalls, and the warm aroma of hot coffee.

In the center of the market square stood a small, charming wooden food kiosk decorated with fresh flowers.

Above the counter hung a polished brass sign: ARTHUR'S KITCHEN - EST. 2026.

Behind the counter stood Elena Vance, wearing a clean green apron, her hair tied back in a neat, elegant braid. She was laughing as she handed a warm paper box of freshly baked pastries to an elderly woman.

Beside her, standing on a sturdy wooden step stool, was two-and-a-half-year-old Arthur Junior. He was wearing a tiny chef's apron, his face smudged with flour, proudly handing paper napkins to the customers with a bright, infectious grin.

"There you go, sweetie!" Elena cheered, wiping a smudge of flour from her son's nose. "You're the best little assistant in the city!"

Little Arthur giggled, clapping his flour-dusted hands together, sending a tiny white cloud floating into the sunny air.

At the edge of the busy square, leaning against an ancient stone pillar under the shade of a striped canvas awning, stood a tall man in a dark, tailored three-piece suit.

It was Luca Moretti.

He held a white porcelain cup of hot black coffee in his gloved hand, taking slow, quiet sips as he watched the mother and son through the crowd. He didn't approach the stall. He didn't interrupt their happiness. He simply stood there—a quiet, vigilant sentinel bathed in the warm, golden morning light.

Little Arthur suddenly stopped playing with his napkins. He turned his dark, intelligent eyes toward the edge of the square, scanning the crowd until his gaze locked directly onto the tall man in the dark suit.

The little boy’s face lit up with immediate recognition. He raised his tiny, flour-covered hand and waved frantically across the square, a bright, joyous smile breaking across his face.

Luca lowered his coffee cup. A soft, genuine smile graced his sharp features—a warm, human expression that transformed the terrifying legend of the underworld into a guardian of peace.

Luca raised his gloved hand, giving the boy a crisp, affectionate nod of respect.

Elena looked over, catching sight of Luca standing under the awning. She offered him a warm, grateful nod of her own, her eyes shining with absolute peace and security.

Luca turned his collar up against the cool morning breeze, took one last sip of his warm coffee, and stepped back into the shifting crowd of the bustling market—walking into the future, an iron shield guarding the light, ensuring that the promise made in the dark would endure forever.
