Chapter 5 - The Harbor of Reckoning

The cold rain swept across the dark waters of New York Harbor like sheets of silver needles.
Three miles off the coast of Brooklyn, the Aegis, a three-hundred-foot luxury megayacht belonging to Victor Sterling, sat anchored in the dark waves. The vessel was lit from bow to stern, its powerful engines idling with a deep, low thrum that vibrated through the water.
Inside the yacht’s master stateroom, Victor Sterling stood before a wall of glowing computer monitors.
Sterling was sixty-two, with slicked-back white hair, a manicured beard, and a face carved from decades of ruthless corporate plunder. He wore an expensive silk robe, a crystal glass of fifty-year-old scotch held loosely in his right hand.
Beside him, a young computer technician was frantically plugging a small glass vial into a high-grade biometric sequencer connected to a satellite uplink.
"Is the sample verified?" Sterling demanded, his voice thin, sharp, and sharp as a razor.
"Sequencing now, Mr. Sterling," the technician stammered, his fingers flying across the glowing mechanical keyboard. "The genetic markers match Arthur Vance's bloodline ninety-nine point nine percent. It's the son's DNA."
Sterling let out a long, wheezing laugh, taking a deep gulp of his scotch. "The fool. Vance thought he could hide behind a woman and a infant. He thought that idealistic bastard Moretti could save him."
"Initiating master decryption protocol," the technician announced, pressing a heavy red key on the console.
On the main display screen, a complex string of green hexadecimal code began scrolling at blinding speed. A progress bar illuminated the dark room: 0%... 25%... 50%...
"Yes!" Sterling hissed, leaning closer to the glass. "Two billion dollars. Untraceable. Liquidated into gold contracts in Zurich. The moment that bar hits one hundred, signal the captain to weigh anchor! We sail for international waters!"
75%... 90%... 99%...
The screen suddenly flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson.
A loud, piercing alarm beeped from the console speakers, echoing through the stateroom.
ERROR: SYNTHETIC BIOMETRIC SPOOF DETECTED.
REVERSE TRACE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.
FEDERAL ASSET SEIZURE ORDER #009-DELTA ENGAGED.
Sterling dropped his scotch glass. The crystal shattered on the hardwood floor, dark amber liquid soaking into the expensive Persian rug. "What... what is this?! Cancel the command! Shut it down!"
"I can't!" the technician screamed in panic, hitting buttons frantically. "The system is locked! It’s overwriting our main drive! It's transmitting our satellite coordinates to... oh god..."
"To whom?!" Sterling roared, grabbing the technician by his collar.
"To the US Coast Guard! And... and the Federal District Attorney!"
Before Sterling could strike the boy, a deafening roar thundered from the rainy night sky outside the yacht’s glass windows.
The heavy, rhythmic beat of helicopter rotor blades cut through the storm. Powerful, blinding white searchlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the yacht’s deck in a light as bright as midday.
Over the vessel’s public address system, a booming, mechanical voice echoed across the water:
"Motor Vessel Aegis! This is the United States Coast Guard! Stand down your engines and prepare to be boarded immediately! You are surrounded!"
Sterling stumbled backward, his face draining of all color. Through the rain-streaked window, he saw three high-speed naval interceptor craft cutting through the dark waves, converging on his yacht from all sides.
And standing on the forward deck of the lead interceptor, completely indifferent to the driving rain and spray of the sea, was a tall man in a heavy black overcoat.

Even through the storm, Sterling recognized the razor-sharp silhouette.
It was Luca Moretti.
