Chapter 2 - The Paper Fortress

The silence that followed Luca Moretti’s declaration was heavy and suffused with a strange, unnatural calmness. Julian Vance lay groaning on the floor, a trickle of dark crimson oozing from his broken nose onto the pristine white tile, but Luca didn't cast a second glance at the fallen enforcer. It was as if Julian had ceased to exist the moment his body hit the ground.
Luca slowly extended a gloved hand, not to touch the child, but to offer Elena a clean, silk handkerchief from his breast pocket.
"Your face, Mrs. Vance," Luca said softly, his Italian-accented English smooth as velvet. "You are bleeding near your temple."
Elena lifted a trembling hand, her fingers brushing the soft silk against her throbbing forehead. When she pulled it away, a small stain of red marked the pristine white fabric. "How... how do you know my name? The hospital registered me under an alias. Nobody was supposed to know I was in labor."
"A hospital is merely a building made of glass and concrete, Mrs. Vance," Luca replied, his eyes taking in every detail of her state—the hyperventilation, the defensive posture, the instinctual way she cradled the newborn against her collarbone. "In this city, secrets are commodities bought and sold long before the ink dries on the admission forms. Your husband’s former associates paid fifty thousand dollars to the head of night security to ensure the cameras in this wing were turned off twenty minutes ago."
Elena’s heart plummeted into a cold, bottomless abyss. "The security... they set me up?"
"They attempted to," Luca corrected gently, adjusting the lapel of his black overcoat. "However, I purchased the security firm's parent company at three o'clock this afternoon. The guards who betrayed your location are currently being escorted off the premises by federal marshals."
Elena stared at him, her mind struggling to process the scale of what he was implying. She was the widow of Arthur Vance, a mid-level accountant who had mistakenly discovered a massive money-laundering network operating through city infrastructure projects. When Arthur was murdered in a staged hit-and-run three weeks ago, Elena had gone into hiding, knowing that Arthur had hidden the master decryption key somewhere only his heir could legally claim.
"The document..." Elena whispered, looking at his coat where the leather clipboard was stowed. "What did you just sign?"
"An emergency court injunction issued by the Federal District Court of New York," Luca explained, his expression remaining completely placid. "It places you and your son under the direct, exclusive legal guardianship of the Moretti Estate. As of thirty seconds ago, any attempt by Julian Vance or his employer to approach within five hundred yards of you is a federal offense carrying an immediate arrest warrant without bail."
"The Moretti Estate..." Elena gasped, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "You're... you're the head of the Moretti Syndicate. The rival family."
Luca’s lips curved into a subtle, melancholic smile. He didn't deny it. "Your husband was not just an accountant, Elena. He was a man of extraordinary courage who sought to protect this city from predators. Before he died, he reached out to me. He knew his time was short. He made me swear a solemn oath."
"An oath?"
"That if anything happened to him, his son would never spend a single day in the shadows," Luca said, his eyes darkening with a fierce, absolute intensity. "Your husband gave me the evidence needed to dismantle Arthur’s killers. In return, I promised him that his bloodline would be protected by every weapon, every dollar, and every drop of blood at my disposal."
On the floor, Julian Vance let out a ragged cough, spitting blood onto the tile. He pushed himself up on one elbow, his eyes glare-fixed on Luca with pure venom. "You... you think a piece of paper stops us, Moretti? The Boss has fifty men outside this building. You walked into a trap!"
Luca didn't turn around. He simply reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted satellite phone, pressing the side button once.
"Phase one complete," Luca said into the receiver. "Clear the perimeter."
Outside the heavy double doors of the hospital wing, the muffled sounds of screeching tires, sharp shouting, and sudden, precise physical struggles echoed through the glass walls. Within forty seconds, the noise ceased entirely, replaced once again by the quiet, sterile hum of the building.
Luca turned his head slightly, glancing down at Julian with icy indifference. "Your fifty men were disarmed and detained three minutes before I walked up these stairs, Julian. You are not an army. You are an inconvenience."
Luca gestured toward two burly men in sharp grey suits who suddenly stepped around the corner of the hallway, moving with military precision. "Take Mr. Vance to the District Attorney’s office. Give him a towel for his nose. He has a very long deposition to give."
"You can't do this! Moretti!" Julian roared as the two guards hoisted him effortlessly from the floor, dragging him away down the corridor, his boots squeaking helplessly against the wet linoleum.
Once the hallway was clear again, Luca turned back to Elena. He stepped aside, opening the heavy wooden door to a private, heavily fortified suite at the end of the hall.
"Your room has been prepared, Mrs. Vance," Luca said softly. "A private medical team is waiting inside to tend to your injuries. No one will enter without my personal authorization."
Elena looked from the dark doorway back to Luca. Her body was trembling from the adrenaline crash, her knees threatening to give way under her weight. "Why would a man like you risk a war for an accountant's child?"
May you like
Luca looked at the tiny baby sleeping peacefully in her arms, his face softening with a deep, hidden grief that flashed across his features for only a fraction of a second before vanishing behind his impenetrable mask.
"Because, Elena," Luca whispered, stepping back into the shadows of the corridor, "Arthur was not the only man who lost a family to those monsters. Now, please, rest. The war has already begun, and I intend to finish it tonight."
