Chapter 4 - The Siege Begins

At 02:15 AM, the power across the entire hospital district blinked twice and died.

The warm lamps in Elena’s room snapped off, replaced instantly by the low, eerie red glow of the hospital’s emergency generators. On the wall monitors, three of the six camera feeds flickered into static.

Inside the room, the temperature seemed to drop instantly.

Luca didn't flinch. He didn't draw a weapon. He stood in the center of the room, his dark eyes calmly scanning the remaining functional monitor feeds. On the screen showing the basement parking garage, three black heavy-duty SUVs slammed through the security gates, carrying a dozen heavily armed men clad in dark tactical gear.

"They're cut off the main power line," Elena gasped, rising from the bed, her heart hammering wildly against her broken ribs.

"As expected," Luca said smoothly. He reached into his vest, pulled out a small silver radio, and spoke into it. "Team Bravo, execute containment protocol Alpha. Do not allow anyone to reach the elevator shafts."

"Understood, Boss," a voice crackled through the static.

Luca turned to Elena. "Stay behind the desk. Keep the boy covered."

He walked over to a heavy leather case sitting near the door, unlatched the silver locks, and opened it. Inside lay two custom-made, matte-black semi-automatic pistols equipped with tactical suppressors, along with four spare magazines.

With terrifyingly practiced, fluid movements, Luca checked the chamber of each weapon, clicked the magazines into place, and racked the slides with a sharp, metallic clack-clack.

"Are you going out there?" Elena asked, her voice trembling as she crouched behind the solid oak desk, clutching her baby close.

"The hunt must be conducted in the corridor, Mrs. Vance," Luca said, stepping toward the reinforced steel door of the suite. "Ballistic glass can withstand bullets, but it cannot withstand an explosive charge. I will not allow them to set foot inside this room."

He paused at the threshold, looking back at her over his shoulder. The red emergency light illuminated the side of his face, accentuating the sharp angle of his jaw and the deadly, viper-shaped tattoo on his neck.

"Lock the door behind me," Luca ordered softly. "Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice give the passphrase."

"What passphrase?" Elena whispered.

"'The rose blooms in the dark,'" Luca replied. "Remember it."

Before she could answer, Luca slipped through the heavy door into the dim, red-lit hallway. The heavy lock clicked automatically into place behind him.

Elena sat in the dark, the red light casting long, blood-colored shadows across the ceiling. She held her breath, listening intently over the gentle breathing of her baby.

For a long minute, there was only silence—the quiet, suffocating stillness of a tomb.

Then, the storm broke.

A heavy volley of suppressed gunfire erupted from the end of the hall—a rapid, rhythmic thwip-thwip-thwip-thwip followed by the sharp shattered noise of glass and breaking wood. Shouts in guttural voices echoed through the concrete structure, answered instantly by the deep, booming roar of Luca's heavy-caliber pistols.

Elena squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her forehead against her baby’s soft head, praying with every fiber of her being.

Through the heavy door, she could hear the brutal, terrifying choreography of the battle. The swift, heavy footsteps of men advancing, the crunch of bones being broken, the metallic fall of spent casings rolling across the tile, and above it all, the absolute, cold efficiency of Luca Moretti.

He moved through the dark hallway not like a man defending a position, but like a predator clearing his territory. Every gunshot from his weapon was deliberate, precise, and fatal.

A sudden, violent explosion rocked the floor beneath Elena’s feet. The light fixture above her head shattered, raining harmless glass onto the rug. The baby let out a sharp cry of alarm, and Elena instantly began rocking him, whispering frantic, breathless words of comfort into his tiny ear.

"Shh... shh, sweet boy... mommy's here... you're safe... you're safe..."

Outside the door, the gunfire began to taper off, replaced by the agonizing groans of wounded men and the sharp, heavy sound of Luca’s boots pacing slowly down the hall.

Silence returned to the hospital corridor—a thick, suffocating silence heavy with the smell of gunpowder and blood.

Elena stayed crouched behind the desk, her muscles locked in terror, her ears straining to catch any sound from the other side of the door.

Five seconds passed. Ten seconds. A minute.

Then, a quiet, metallic sound echoed from the door lock.

Click.

Elena’s heart stopped. She reached blindly onto the desk, her fingers closing around a heavy silver brass candleholder, her knuckles turning white as she raised it above her head, ready to strike.

The heavy steel door swung slowly open.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the deep red emergency lights of the ruined hallway, was Luca Moretti. His white shirt was flecked with crimson stains, his charcoal vest torn slightly at the shoulder, but his posture was upright, his face completely composed. He held one of his black pistols at his side, smoke rising lazily from the barrel.

He looked into the dark room, his eyes instantly finding Elena crouched behind the desk.

"The rose blooms in the dark, Elena," Luca spoke, his baritone voice steady and calm.

Elena let out a long, ragged gasp, dropping the heavy candleholder onto the carpet, tears of relief bursting from her eyes as she collapsed against the side of the desk.

Luca stepped into the room, re-engaging the safety on his weapon and slipping it back into his shoulder holster. "The primary assault team has been neutralized. The building is secure."

He walked over to the desk, kneeling down beside her, his dark eyes searching her face with genuine concern. "Are you or the child harmed?"

"No... no, we're okay," Elena sobbed, wiping her face with her sleeve. "Is it over?"

"The physical threat to this room is over," Luca said, reaching out to offer her his hand to help her stand. "But the final phase remains. The Syndicate’s leader, Victor Sterling, is currently aboard his private yacht in the harbor, preparing to flee the country. He believes his men succeeded in retrieving your son's DNA."

Elena froze, looking up at him as she stood up. "How could he think that?"

Luca pulled a small, sealed glass vial from his vest pocket. Inside was a tiny drop of dark red fluid.

"Because fifteen minutes ago, my men intercepted Sterling's secondary courier in the basement," Luca said with a dark, calculating glint in his eye. "I provided him with a synthetic sample containing Arthur's genetic markers—just enough to trick Sterling's portable scanner into attempting the master decryption."

"What happens when he tries to run the decryption?" Elena asked, her eyes widening.

Luca’s lips curved into a cold, terrifying smile. "The moment his computer connects to the master server using that sample, it triggers a reverse trace protocol. Every dollar in Sterling's offshore network will be frozen, and his exact GPS coordinates will be transmitted directly to the United States Navy."

Luca looked at the newborn sleeping safely in her arms. "Your husband built a trap, Elena. Tonight, we spring it."
