THE ECHOES OF OLIVIA / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Extraction

The rain felt like clean, purifying water as Ethan burst through the shattered front door of 412 Mill Street, carrying Leo in his arms while Vance followed closely behind, cradling Olivia against his chest.

Down the block, the flashing red and blue lights of two emergency vehicles cut through the gray gloom of the industrial district, their sirens wailing against the brick warehouses.

Dr. Aris Thorne—a tall, sharp-featured physician in white scrubs—leaped out of the lead vehicle before it had even come to a full stop, followed by two paramedics carrying a heavy orange stretcher.

"Over here!" Ethan shouted, stepping out onto the wet pavement.

Dr. Thorne took one look at Olivia’s grey skin and the makeshift IV line, his professional composure instantly shifting into high-gear emergency medicine. "Get her on the board! Oxygen at ten liters! Start a wide-bore IV in her right arm—she's severely hypovolemic!"

The paramedics moved with practiced speed, transferring Olivia onto the cushioned stretcher. An oxygen mask was strapped over her face, the clear plastic instantly fogging with her shallow, rapid breaths.

Leo stood by Ethan’s side, holding onto his father's belt loop with a iron grip, watching his mother being loaded into the back of the ambulance.

From the shattered doorway of the red house, Dr. Julian Vance stumbled out onto the porch, his clothes covered in dirt, blood trickling from a cut on his forehead where he had hit the concrete floor. He had retrieved his silver-topped cane and was leaning heavily against the doorframe, his face contorted in rage.

"Arrest them!" the old doctor shouted toward two city police cruisers that had pulled up behind the ambulance, their tires splashing water onto the curb. "They assaulted me! They breached my private property!"

Detective Marcus Kane—a veteran officer with a graying mustache and a heavy leather coat—stepped out of the lead cruiser, pulling his badge from his belt.

"Dr. Vance?" Kane asked, walking up the steps toward the porch. "We received an emergency transmission from a satellite phone registered to Cole Enterprises regarding a clandestine medical facility."

"It's a lie!" Dr. Vance roared. "I am a respected physician! Edward Cole's personal foundation—"

"Save it, Doctor," Detective Kane interrupted smoothly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a digital recording device that Vance—the driver—had handed him three minutes earlier over an encrypted channel.

Kane pressed play.

The old doctor’s own voice echoed across the rain-slicked street, crystal clear, unedited, and damning:

"For nine years, her bone marrow has kept your father alive... Once the boy was born, he became the lever to keep her quiet. If she didn't cooperate, the boy suffered..."

Dr. Julian Vance went completely white. His silver cane slipped from his fingers, clattering down the wooden porch steps into the dirty rainwater below.

Detective Kane snapped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto the doctor’s wrists with a loud, final CLICK.

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for kidnapping, human trafficking, illegal medical experimentation, and child abuse," Kane said, driving the old man down onto his knees against the wet wood. "You have the right to remain silent."
