Chapter 2 - The Bruised Intermediary

The cold air hit Ethan like a physical blow, snapping the tailored comfort of his corporate cocoon. He strode toward the front of the vehicle, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply against the pavement. His adrenaline was spiking, fueled by a mixture of residual shock and the burning irritation of an executive whose schedule had been violently disrupted.

"Are you crazy?" Ethan demanded, his voice booming across the empty driveway as he gestured forcefully toward the idling front bumper. "I could have hit you! You don't run in front of a moving vehicle!"

The boy didn't flinch from the anger. Instead, he took two frantic steps closer, his worn sneakers squeaking on the wet pavement. Tears ran freely down his bruised cheeks, cutting clean, pale tracks through the dust on his face.

"They wouldn't let me inside!" the boy cried, his voice high, cracking with a desperate, ragged sob. He pointed a shaking finger back toward the massive glass doors where two uniformed security guards were already trotting down the steps to intervene. "I tried to tell them! I waited for three hours by the gate, but they told me they'd call the police if I didn't leave!"

"Because you're trespassing on private property," Ethan said, though the sharp edge in his voice began to dull as he looked down into the child's swollen face. The red marks weren't fresh blood, but severe, deep tissue trauma—the kind inflicted by a heavy, blunt hand. "Where are your parents, kid? Where do you live?"

"My mom is dying!" the boy sobbed, clutching the plastic-wrapped object so tightly against his dirty hoodie that his knuckles turned paper-white. "She's in the basement... she can't breathe right! She keeps calling your name! She told me if I didn't find you today, she wouldn't be here when I got back!"

Ethan paused, a heavy frown creasing his brow. "Calling my name? What are you talking about?"

"Ethan Cole!" the boy shouted, as if repeating the name would unlock something inside the man standing before him. "She told me, 'Find Ethan Cole at the big glass tower. Show him the picture.' She swore you'd come if you saw it!"

Vance had reached them now, placing his large frame between Ethan and the child, his eyes vigilant. "Mr. Cole, security is here. Let them handle the boy. We're going to miss your flight."

The guards arrived, breathless, radio units crackling at their shoulders. "Sorry, Mr. Cole. We told this kid to clear off an hour ago. We'll handle him." One of the guards reached out to grab the boy’s sleeve.

"Don't touch me!" the boy screamed, ducking away from the guard's grip and throwing himself forward, dropping to his knees on the cold asphalt directly at Ethan’s feet. He extended his shaking hands upward, holding out the plastic bag. "Please! Just look at it! Who is your mother, you asked? Look!"
