Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Line

One year later.

The high, clear sky over the coastal meadow was the exact shade of brilliant sapphire. The tall grass rippled in the gentle sea breeze like a sea of green silk, speckled with thousands of wild yellow daisies that caught the afternoon sun.

In the center of the meadow, a camera rested on a sturdy wooden tripod.

Ethan stood beside the camera, wearing an old canvas jacket—the same style jacket he had worn ten years ago—adjusting the lens focus with a practiced hand.

A few feet away, sitting on a colorful plaid picnic blanket spread over the clover, was Olivia. She wore a simple white linen dress, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. In her lap, she held a four-month-old baby girl wrapped in a pale pink cellular blanket—their daughter, Hope.

Leo sat beside his mother, his arm wrapped proudly around her shoulders, holding a toy wooden sailboat he had carved with his father earlier that morning.

"Is the timer set, Dad?" Leo called out, his voice full of excitement.

"Timer is set for ten seconds!" Ethan called back, pressing the shutter button on the top of the vintage camera.

CLICK-TICK-TICK-TICK...

Ethan ran across the grass, dropping to his knees on the plaid blanket beside Olivia, wrapping his right arm tightly around her waist while placing his left hand over Leo’s shoulder.

Olivia looked up at Ethan, her hazel eyes shining with a love that had survived the deepest darkness human cruelty could devise. She leaned her head against his shoulder, her hand resting over his on their baby daughter's blanket.

SNAP.

The mechanical shutter clicked, capturing the moment forever on chemical film.

The print that emerged weeks later was not faded, yellowed, or stained with dirt. It was vibrant, sharp, and bathed in an golden light that no shadow could ever touch.

In the photograph, there were no bruises. There were no iron cages. There were no ghosts calling out from the dark.

There was only a family—unbroken, whole, and standing together in the light.
