THE ECHOES OF OLIVIA / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The Clearing of the Slate

Six months later.

The quiet coastal town of St. Andrews sat nestled on a green bluff overlooking the blue expanse of the North Atlantic Ocean. The air was crisp, carrying the sweet scent of wild pine, salty spray, and fresh clover.

A miles-long gravel road wound its way through rolling green pastures to a small, two-story white farmhouse with a stone porch and bright blue shutters.

On the front lawn, Leo—his face completely healed, his skin bronze from months of outdoor light—was running through the tall grass with a young golden retriever puppy, their happy shouts echoing over the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the cliffs below.

On the stone porch sat Olivia, wearing a comfortable beige knit sweater and jeans. She sat in a wooden rocking chair, a sketch pad resting on her knees, her charcoal pencil moving smoothly across the paper as she captured the movement of her son and the dog in the sunlight. Her skin was radiant, her body healthy and strong once more, her hazel eyes filled with a peace that no dark cellar could ever steal away again.

The screen door creaked open, and Ethan walked out onto the porch carrying two warm mugs of coffee.

He was dressed casually in a denim shirt and dark trousers, free of the rigid corporate suits that had defined his life for a decade. He had resigned from his position at Cole Enterprises three months ago, leaving the company in the hands of an independent trust while he moved his family to the coast.

"He's getting fast," Ethan smiled, handing a mug to Olivia and sitting on the edge of the porch beside her chair.

Olivia set her sketch pad down, looking down at Ethan with a soft, radiant smile. "He sleeps through the night now, Ethan. No nightmares for two weeks."

Ethan reached up, resting his hand over hers on the armrest, feeling the warm, strong pulse in her wrist.

"Dr. Thorne called this morning," Ethan said gently. "Your blood work came back completely clear. The protein levels have normalized. You're officially in full remission."

Olivia closed her eyes, letting out a long, slow breath of pure relief as the warm coastal breeze tousled her dark curls.

"We made it out, Ethan," she whispered, her voice full of a quiet, reverence. "We actually made it out."

Ethan stood up, leaning down to press his lips gently against hers—a long, deep kiss that carried the weight of nine years of loss, nine years of grief, and the infinite promise of the life they were building together.

"We're home, live," Ethan murmured against her lips. "We're home."
