Chapter 10 - The Dawn over the Tarmac

Emily stood alone beside the bench near the great glass window.
In her hands, she held her identity badge. The plastic felt warm against her skin.
Outside, the Atlantic gale had died down to a gentle breeze. The rain had ceased entirely, leaving millions of clear water droplets clinging to the glass, each one catching the vibrant, fiery red and gold rays of the setting sun. Out on the tarmac, the grounded jets were firing up their engines, their red navigation lights blinking rhythmically against the clearing sky.
Passengers were moving past her again, but the concourse no longer felt cold or hostile.
Emily pinned her badge back onto her chest. She took a deep, slow breath of the warm terminal air, feeling the heavy knot of fear in her chest dissolve into an overwhelming, radiant sense of purpose.

She looked down at the metal bench where the old woman had sat shivering just twenty minutes ago. Resting on the floor beside the bench was the empty, clear plastic bottle of mineral water.
Emily smiled, straightened her posture, and walked toward the light streaming through the glass.
