Chapter 3 - The Edge of Authority

Emily stood up quickly, smoothing down the front of her dark navy skirt as she turned around.

Striding across the concourse with heavy, aggressive steps was Richard Vance.

At forty-eight, Vance was the Regional Ground Operations Manager for North Atlantic Airways. He was a broad, thick-necked man dressed in an immaculate black manager’s suit with three gold bars stitched onto his sleeves—a detail he insisted on wearing to project pilot-level authority despite never having flown an aircraft. His black necktie was pulled tight against his collar, his silvering hair slicked back with heavy gel. His face was flushed red, his jaw clenched in a tight, furious line.

Vance was notorious throughout the airport for his tyrannical management style. To him, the terminal was not a transit hub for human beings; it was a factory floor where human empathy was an inefficiency that ate into corporate profit margins and turnaround times.

"What do you think you're doing, Emily?" Vance barked as he halted two feet from her, his chest heaving slightly. He didn't bother to glance at the old woman on the bench. His furious, narrow eyes were locked entirely on Emily's face.

"Sir, the passenger was shivering," Emily explained calmly, keeping her hands clasped behind her back. "She’s soaked from the rain and appears to be in mild distress. I was simply providing her with a bottle of water and advising her—"

"I don't care if she's turning into an ice cube!" Vance snapped, his voice booming loud enough to attract the attention of several nearby travelers, who turned to watch the confrontation. "Look at Gate 22! Flight 812 just received clearance for boarding! You have two hundred angry passengers standing at that jetway, and my desk staff is down one representative because you're playing Mother Teresa to a vagrant!"

"She isn't a vagrant, Mr. Vance," Emily said, her tone dipping into a firm, protective lower register. "She is a person in our terminal. Our customer service manual explicitly states that passenger safety and wellbeing—"

"Don't quote the manual to me!" Vance stepped closer, leaning into Emily’s personal space. The smell of his harsh, metallic cologne washed over her. "You report to me, Emily! Not the manual! I've been watching you on the security monitors for the past three weeks. You spend too much time talking to people who don't have first-class tickets. You waste company resources. You lack the killer instinct required for this department!"

"I am doing my job, sir," Emily replied quietly, her eyes unwavering.

"No, you were doing your job three minutes ago!" Vance yelled, raising his right hand and pointing a thick, blunt index finger directly at her nose. "Emily! Emily! Get back to work now or you're done!"
