Chapter 12 - The Ghost of Terminal 4

A month after her promotion, Emily returned to Kennedy International Airport for an unannounced inspection of Terminal 4.

She walked through the security gates dressed in a simple charcoal coat, her executive badge tucked discreetly inside her pocket. She wanted to see the terminal through the eyes of the passengers, unannounced and unescorted.

The terminal was bright, bustling, and energetic. The cold, hostile atmosphere that had defined the storm night had vanished. Near Gate 22, new heated seating areas had been installed, complete with complimentary water stations and warm blanket dispensers operated by friendly, smiling staff members.

As Emily walked past the coffee shop, she noticed a man sitting on a wooden bench near the trash receptacles.

It was Richard Vance.

He was no longer wearing his gold-barred suit or his slicked-back gelled hair. He wore a faded, rumpled jacket and jeans, looking ten years older. He sat holding a paper cup of cold coffee, his eyes hollow as he watched the current passenger service agents moving efficiently across the concourse. He had been blacklisted from working in commercial aviation management across the state.

Emily stopped ten feet away.

Part of her felt a lingering shadow of the fear he had inflicted on her; but as she looked at his slumped shoulders and defeated posture, the fear dissolved into a quiet, profound pity. Cruelty, she realized, was ultimately a pathetic, self-cannibalizing trap.

She did not approach him. She did not seek revenge or confrontation.

Instead, Emily turned away, pulling her phone from her pocket, and dialed her ground operations coordinator.

"Sarah," Emily said into her earpiece. "Send a meal voucher over to the gentleman sitting near the coffee shop at Gate 22. Don't tell him who sent it. Just make sure he has a warm lunch."
