Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Mask

The old woman slowly reached into the interior pocket of her damp beige trench coat.
She did not pull out a crumpled tissue or a handful of loose change. Instead, her thin, liver-spotted fingers emerged holding a sleek, ultra-thin smartphone encased in dark blue leather—a custom, military-grade encrypted device worth thousands of dollars.
With fluid, effortless movements that betrayed none of her previous frail hesitation, the old woman tapped the glass screen twice. She brought the phone up to her ear.
"It's Eleanor," the old woman said into the receiver. Her voice was no longer raspy or weak. It was a rich, commanding, cultured alto that carried an absolute, undeniable frequency of power—the voice of a woman who was accustomed to speaking, and having boardrooms of billionaires fall completely silent to listen.
Across the concourse, Vance stopped in his tracks. Hearing the clear, authoritative voice echoing behind him, he turned around, frowning in confusion.
"Cancel the emergency board meeting in London," Eleanor instructed the person on the other end of the line, her eyes fixed entirely on Emily’s stunned face. "Inform the executive committee that I will not be attending the press conference tonight."
There was a brief pause as the caller on the phone responded frantically.
"No, Arthur, I am perfectly fine," Eleanor continued, her tone crisp and unyielding. "The private jet can stay on the tarmac. I found who I was looking for."
She ended the call with a light tap of her thumb, sliding the luxury phone back into her coat pocket.
Emily stood frozen, her eyes wide, her mouth slightly open.
Eleanor Vance—no relation to Richard—was the founder, majority shareholder, and reigning Chairwoman of Vanguard Global Logistics, the parent conglomerate that owned eighty percent of North Atlantic Airways, as well as three major international airports and sixteen maritime shipping fleets across four continents. She was one of the most powerful, reclusive figures in global commercial infrastructure.
Eleanor slowly reached up to her grey hair. With a swift, deliberate movement, she pulled off the wet, disheveled wig, revealing a pristine, perfectly styled silver bob underneath. She reached down, unbuttoned the damp beige trench coat, and let it slip off her shoulders onto the metal bench.
Beneath the battered coat, she wore a bespoke, tailored navy silk suit with a subtle pinstripe, accessorized by a single strand of rare Tahitian black pearls around her neck.

She was not homeless. She was not stranded.
She was conducting a audit of her empire's soul.
