Chapter 6 - The Digital Evidence

Inside the secure glass pavilion near the gate, Eleanor sat beside Clara on the velvet bench, holding her daughter’s trembling hands.
The cracked smartphone lay on the marble table between them. Eleanor reached out with a shaky finger, tapping the shattered screen. Despite the fractured glass, the video playback interface opened smoothly.
Eleanor pressed play.
The small speaker emitted the sickening sound of the leather strap slicing through the air, followed by Julian's cold, menacing voice: 'You'll learn to obey me.' Then came Clara's desperate pleas, the sound of the strike, and the brutal reality of the abuse that had been happening behind closed doors for months.
Tears streamed down Eleanor's face, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edges of the table. "Oh god... Clara... why didn't you tell us? Why didn't you say something?"
"He told me... he said if I told anyone, he would destroy Dad's firm," Clara sobbed, her voice barely a whisper. "He said he had access to the private network... that he could ruin everything Dad built..."
Eleanor pulled her daughter into a fierce, protective embrace. "Your father built his empire on dirt and blood, sweetheart. Julian couldn't destroy him if he tried for a hundred years."
Outside, Marcus walked back toward the pavilion. He opened the door, his eyes dropping to the phone screen still playing the terrifying video loop.
His face didn't register surprise or sorrow; it locked into an absolute, icy resolve. He reached down, picking up the device, and plugged a encrypted thumb drive into its base port.
"The file is backed up to our cloud servers," Marcus said flatly, pulling the drive out and handing the phone back to Eleanor. "It's secure. The local police chief is already on his way with three units."
He looked at Clara, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "He will never lay a hand on you again, Clara. I promise you."

"Dad..." Clara whispered, looking toward the main house. "He ran into the basement... he has a master key to the safe..."
Marcus tilted his head slightly, a cold smile touching the corner of his lips. "Good. It's easier to catch a rat when it runs into a hole."
