Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Blood and Marble

The foyer of Ravencrest Estate smelled of expensive polish, lemon oil, and the sharp, iron tang of freshly shed blood.

In the high-ceilinged grand hallway, paved with a cold, geometric black-and-white checkered marble floor, the silence was shattered by the piercing, frantic screams of a three-month-old infant. The child, wrapped in a pristine white cotton onesie, lay on its back in the exact center of the black-and-white grid, its tiny fists flailing against the frigid stone.

On the left side of the baby knelt Martha Vance, the estate’s fifty-two-year-old head maid. She wore her traditional black uniform with a starched white apron, her greying hair pulled into a tight, severe bun. Her body shook with violent, uncontrollable sobs. Across her left cheekbone was a swollen, dark crimson welt—a fresh, heavy contusion that had already purpled at the edges, puffing her eye nearly shut. Her raw, calloused hands reached out in a trembling shield, holding the infant’s legs protectively, pulling him closer to her body as if guarding him from an oncoming train.

On the right side knelt Victoria Sterling.

At twenty-eight, Victoria was the second wife of tech billionaire Julian Sterling—a woman of lethal, porcelain beauty, dressed in an expensive sleeveless white crepe gown that draped over the dark floor like fallen snow. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and burning with a terrifying, unhinged fury. Her hand was raised high in the air, her fingers curled into a claw, poised to strike down at the helpless child on the floor.

"You miserable, ungrateful parasite!" Victoria screamed, her voice echoing off the double-curved staircases flanking the foyer.

Before her hand could descend, the heavy, solid oak front doors burst open behind them with a deafening thunder.

Julian Sterling stepped across the threshold.

At forty-eight, Julian was a titan of defense contract software—a man built like an iron pillar, wearing a bespoke charcoal grey wool suit and a silk tie. He dropped his leather briefcase onto the marble floor. His eyes swept across the horrifying tableau: his crying newborn son, his wife in white with her arm raised in violence, and his battered head maid bleeding onto the checkered floor.

Julian didn't speak. He ran.

His heavy leather dress shoes slammed against the black-and-white tiles, the rapid, rhythmic THUD-THUD-THUD sounding like a war drum in the vaulted space.

"Julian!" Victoria gasped, her arm freezing mid-air as she turned her head toward him, her rage instantly metamorphosing into a grotesque mask of wide-eyed innocence. "Julian, thank God you're home! She dropped him! Martha tried to kill him!"
