Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Victoria looked at the black pen on the table. Her mind raced frantically, searching for an exit, a loop-hole, a leverage point—anything to save her from complete ruin.

"If I sign..." she whispered, her voice shaking, "...what do I get?"

"You get to walk out of those gates on your own two feet," Julian replied without hesitation. "You keep the clothes on your back and the jewelry currently in your bedroom. Not a single penny more. The twenty-million-dollar trust is forfeited."

"You can't do this to me!" she screamed, her eyes flaring with one last burst of desperate, useless rage. "I'll go to the press! I'll tell the newspapers that Julian Sterling uses secret surrogates and hides his dead wife's legacy! I'll ruin your company's stock!"

Julian smiled—a cold, terrifying flash of white teeth in the dim room.

"Try it," Julian murmured. "The moment you speak to a single journalist, those videos from the nursery will be broadcast on every news network in the world. You won't just be poor, Victoria. You will be the most hated woman on the planet. You won't be able to buy a cup of coffee without someone spitting in your face."

Victoria stared at him. She saw no mercy in his eyes. She saw no hesitation. Julian Sterling was a man who had built an empire by destroying his enemies without a second thought, and she had walked willingly into his trap.

Her knees buckled. She sank down onto the rug before the coffee table.

With trembling, ruined fingers, she picked up the black fountain pen. She didn't read the pages. She flipped through the document, her signature jagged and broken, leaving black ink splatters across the pristine white paper.

Victoria Sterling.

Victoria Sterling.

May you like

Victoria Sterling.

She slammed the pen down, buried her face in her hands, and wept hysterically against the edge of the table.
