Chapter 10 - The Golden Horizon

The storm passed by dawn.

The morning sun broke over the pine-covered hills surrounding Ravencrest Estate, casting long, golden spears of light across the vast, rain-washed grounds.

In the nursery on the third floor, the high windows were open, letting in the cool, sweet scent of wet pine and fresh air.

Julian sat in a large oak rocking chair near the window, dressed in a comfortable grey cashmere sweater, holding three-month-old Leo in his arms. The baby was laughing softly, its tiny hands reaching up to grab the gold chain of a small, antique locket hanging around Julian’s neck.

Julian clicked the locket open.

Inside was a black-and-white photograph of Clara—smiling, beautiful, and full of life—and on the opposite side, a tiny lock of the baby's soft brown hair.

"Look, Leo," Julian whispered, tilting the locket so the morning sun caught the gold. "That's your mother. She's watching over us."

Martha stepped into the nursery, carrying a freshly washed white cotton blanket. She smiled warmly as she saw the father and son rocking gently in the sunlit room.

"The legal team called, Mr. Sterling," Martha reported softly. "The annulment is finalized. The Vance-Sterling board has unanimously reaffirmed your controlling interest in the trust. The estate is secure."

Julian looked up from his son, a deep, profound sense of peace washing over his features for the first time in years. The terrifying, vengeful patriarch had vanished, replaced by a father who had fought for his home and won.

"Thank you, Martha," Julian said, his voice rich and steady. "Set a table for three in the garden dining room today. It's time Leo had his breakfast in the sun."

"Right away, sir," Martha replied with a soft nod, turning to leave the nursery.

Julian looked down at his son one last time. The child’s pale grey eyes locked onto his, bright, innocent, and completely free of fear.

Julian leaned down, pressing his lips gently against the baby's forehead, feeling the warm, steady pulse of the future beating beneath his skin.

And as the golden light of the new morning filled every corner of Ravencrest Estate, erasing the cold shadows of the past, the patriarch knew his son was finally safe.
