Chapter 10 - The Depths of the Audit

While Victoria sat in a maximum-security holding cell awaiting trial, the full scope of her sociopathic manipulation was systematically dismantled by state investigators.

Detective Miller sat across from Mark in a quiet conference room at the precinct. On the table between them lay a series of transcripts and financial records recovered from Victoria’s private safe.

"She didn't just target Lucy because of the accounting discrepancies, Mark," Miller explained, sliding a document across the table. "She had been planning to eliminate both of you for over six months."

Mark frowned, picking up the document. "What do you mean?"

"Victoria took out a key-man life insurance policy on both you and Lucy through the restaurant corporation," Miller said, his tone grave. "Two million dollars each, with a double-indemnity clause for accidental death on commercial premises."

Mark felt a cold chill run down his spine, far worse than the air inside the walk-in freezer. "She wanted us both dead to collect the insurance payout."

"Exactly," Miller confirmed. "She used the fake story about Lucy abandoning the family to isolate you, planning to stage your 'accidental' death in the kitchen a few weeks later. She was going to frame it as a tragic accident caused by a distraught husband."

Mark leaned back in his chair, staring at the polished wood table. The sheer depth of the calculated evil he had lived beside for years was staggering. He had considered Victoria a friend, a business partner who had given him a chance when he needed a job.

"And Toby?" Mark asked softly.

"She was going to place him in state custody once you were gone," Miller replied. "She thought a seven-year-old boy would be completely defenseless, unable to articulate what had happened."

Mark stood up slowly, leaning his hands on the table, his knuckles turning white. "She miscalculated."

"Yes, she did," Miller said with a rare, approving smile. "She underestimated the bond of a family fighting for survival."
