Chapter 9 - The Recovery of Memory

Three weeks later, the physical wounds had begun to heal, but the psychological scars remained etched into the quiet moments of the family's life.
The Haven Crest Bistro had been seized by federal receivers, its operations halted permanently as forensic accountants untangled the millions of dollars Victoria had stolen from investors and employees alike.
Mark, Lucy, and Toby sat in the sunlit living room of their modest suburban home. The space was simple—warm hardwood floors, soft linen couches, and large windows that let in the afternoon sunshine.
Lucy sat on the sofa, a warm cup of tea resting in her hands. Though her fingers still occasionally tingled from the frostbite damage, the blue tint had vanished from her skin, replaced by a healthy, warm color. Toby lay on the rug at her feet, quietly drawing with colored pencils.
Mark walked in from the kitchen, holding a folder of legal documents provided by the District Attorney’s office.
"The grand jury returned a twenty-two-count indictment this morning," Mark said softly, sitting beside Lucy on the couch. "Attempted murder, kidnapping, child endangerment, grand larceny, and corporate fraud. She won't ever get out, Lucy."
Lucy set her tea down, her fingers intertwining with Mark's. "What about the restaurant?"
"The bank is liquidating the assets," Mark replied. "The court agreed to prioritize our restitution claim from the seized offshore accounts. We're going to be okay, financially."
Lucy looked down at Toby, who was busily drawing a picture of a house with a giant bright yellow sun above it.
"He saved us, Mark," Lucy whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "If he hadn't fought back... if he hadn't climbed into that duct..."
Mark leaned down, placing his hand gently on Toby's back. "He’s stronger than both of us combined."

Toby looked up from his paper, holding up his drawing. "Look, Mommy. I drew the sun. It's so hot that no ice can ever grow here."
Lucy pulled him up onto her lap, burying her face in his hair, weeping silent tears of immense gratitude.
